New M5, need help with rattle in steering wheel

Hi
New 08 M5 here...loving it...cant wait to fully break it in.

In the meantime, (Ive done many searches with no result) I am experience a slight rattle coming from the steering wheel or steering column.
Its more like a tinkle tinkle, as if there is a lose washer on a bolt somewhere...
Anyone have any suggestions before I ask the dealer......

Thanks,
Eric

Next time it happens, put your finger on the turn signal stalk and see if it stops. I get a noise there once in a while. The dealer refused to replace it under warranty

It could be the stalk with the "BC" and "Check" buttons. See this thread:

"Check" & "BC" buttons rattle??

As I mentioned in my reply in that thread, I got my dealer to replace the stalk under warranty.

+1 for me as well. I have a rattle on my '06. I thought it was one of the buttons on the steering wheel since the sound can be reproduced by tapping around them on the steering wheel's face. I'll hold the BC and Check buttons on my next drive to confirm that is the source. If it is, then I'll have the dealer replace the turn signal control unit.

I also have a rattle on my '06.
Depends from the tarmac, some times I don't hear anything, sometimes the tarmac is a bit bad and jerky, and this does not stop rattling, looks like below the steering wheel. It does not stop when I touch the buttons or levers.

As I really cannot stand that rattle, a few days ago I opened the plastics below the wheel. I found one of the 2 levers, maybe the Check and BC one, has a small box with the connections that is closed ( sealed ) by a plastic cover that is a bit free moving ( just maintained inside by small clips ).
I put some glue on that cover so that it cannot vibrate any longer.
Since then I have not had any rattle, but nevertheless not sure it is solved, as I said it does not do it all the time in anyway.

Hope this helps.

I had the same issue - always drove with the radio on or windows down. I was driving down the 101 with no music and windows up on grooved pavement a few weeks ago and heard that sound...as I was driving I kept touching different places to try and isolate it. It was the BC button on the turn signal stalk. Dealer fixed it under warranty without any hassle - they shouldn't give you any flack about this.

Didn't do it on smooth pavement...
