Hey guys, I know this might be a question that has already been discussed, but I can't seem to find the answer when I did a search. Many of you have purchased brand new as well as CPO, when doing all these modifications and upgrades... does it void your warranty in any way?

Depends on the mod and what part of your warranty gets void. For example if you have an exhaust and ur SMG pump goes then it is still covered under warranty of course. However, if you put on aftermarket springs and something happens with ur EDC, then (depending on the situation and the actual problem) you may not be covered under warranty. Basically if there is a mod that is directly related to your warranty claim then you may not be covered. But in no way, shape, or form can a dealer decline your warranty for your engine if you simply put rims on your car (or something along those lines).
Ok. How about pulleys, software, air intakes, headers?
Pulleys: YES - there has been an incident on the forums where a member was declined warranty coverage on a blown engine (06 m5)
----> The safe route is to buy DINAN 13% Pulley (backs oem warranty if anything should go wrong, relating to the mod, its covered) The 16% pulley by dinan is considered a 'race' product and is not backed by their oem matching warranty. this is to my knowledge the only one or very few parts (no more than 1-3 parts) that are not covered.
Software: YES - I have DINAN + rev limiter 150, again backed oem warranty but if you get a chip that increases rev at all or over 150 that is not backed by warranty, and your engine blows then you have a problem. bmw can say you overrevved.
----> The safe route = DINAN
Air Intake: NO - Unless your air intake does not function properly and your engine overheats and seizes.
----> Most people buy DINAN (retains air boxes, and oem warr. backed) or ASR (actual cold air intake, group buy going on i think)
Headers: NO - Most likely not.
So your best bet with all aftermarket mods is to go with DINAN. I have a lot of dinan parts on my current 2008 and will be ordering parts for my 2010 soon (ecu stage III, intake (if not dinan, asr), front strut c/f brace, 16% pulley).
You should be fine with an exhaust, but just be careful with any mods that bring the car out of spec (like ecu increasing rev by 150rpm) that is not oem warranty backed.
In most cases your warranty claim will only be denied if the modification is a direct result as the part(s) that failed (ex. rpi oil cooler not working properly so the engine overheats (this hasn't happened just an example, rpi is another good mod company).
Have fun man, i'm already ordering parts for my 2010 m5 that hasnt started production. Already have a set of 20" HRE P41's ordered and will be ordering a bunch of DINAN parts within a week or two. Right now there is a direct 10% discount (direct-rebate) on all parts.

Technically, under the Magnusson Moss Act (federal law), a new car warranty can't be voided just because you replace a factory part with an aftermarket part. So, as suggested here, if the failure has nothing to do with the change, the dealer/manufacturer will generally cover without a whimper.
If the replaced part is or could have affected the claim, then most of the times it will be denied. Now, as a practical matter, that is wrong, the manufacturer has to show the non factory part caused the failure. As a practical matter, you have to appeal their denial. Dealers and manufacturers usually have a lot more money to fight than the average consumer!
A lot of dealers will use "goodwill" money to help a good customer, and a dealer can go to bat for a customer too. A lot of times a claim will be accepted or denied by how it is written up. For example, valve cover oil weeping is not going to be covered, but valve cover oil leak will be. So, it pays to be on good terms with your SA!!
Regards,
Jerry

From my experience RPi have the most common intake system among M5's and M6's and that it's very warranty safe. My SA has an M5 with RPi intake, he says it's fine along with exhaust (excluding headers).
