Official BMW NA statement:

The European makers, who sell the most likely rivals to the CTS-V, have steered clear of the challenge. But not out of fear of losing, they say.

"We have no fear of comparisons by objective bodies, but it's different if the person doing the comparison has a dog in the hunt," BMW Vice President Tom Kowaleski says. He notes that GM can use results of the challenge any way it wants in marketing pitches, which should make any rival automaker wary.

The 500-hp, $89,000 BMW M5 is a direct CTS-V rival.

Win or lose, I would buy the M5/M6 1000 times out of 1000 times over the Cadicrap. No comparison IMO.

This is a really cool marketing event that GM is doing! Hehe i doubt GM would publish results if they loose It will be an intresting race, have they stated how it would work? Is it a real race like the Best Motoring ones (starting grid with all cars and results based on final position and quickest lap) or just timed laps?

The CTS-V is cheaper and slightly quicker then the M5 (thanks to the big supercharged engine), those are pure facts, its a great car in many aspects, a huge step forward for a non German saloon IMO! But as an overall driving experience considering also engineering, quality, materials and smart solutions the M5 would be my pick any day of the week.

I think the difference in performance on a track would be so small though that a really good driver in an M5 would be quicker then a good driver in the CTS-V, should be an interesting race! Hope they publish a video from the event!

I don't think BMW expects to sell anymore E60's, so why not go out there and possibly whip that caddy in the challenge and damage Caddy's marketing hopes!

Bob Lutz has a race car driver on hand in case he is needed there is no way the CTS-V will lose. Especially considering that the drivers who signed up probably have little to no track experience....

Exactly if they don't plan to sell more M5s why waste their time n money? Especially when they can put that money towards hybrid and turbo vehicles! Ha

Guess why? They know the Panamera Turbo is faster and hence it would look bad in this test if they included that...

Could also be due to that there aren't that many Panamera Turbo's out there yet with it being delivered to the first owners within the last month or so. But it's the only 4 door saloon that is quicker around a track on paper.
