Engine Pinging

I have been using a BP fuel (Ultimate 98 RON). I have tried a few different fuel stations and have noticed a bit of pinging under load up hills. I tried a bottle of octane boost and I did not detect any pinging after putting it in.

i just wonder if the fuel is as its supposed to be. The M5 should not ping even on 95 RON.

Anyone else suffer from pinging?

Cheers

Is that 98 octane??? We run 93-91 octane here. So no, something is wrong if you have that high of a grade and it is pinging. Try a different station to see if you are getting ripped off. I would assume though that the grading stardards of fuel may be different between AUS and USA?? Not sure.

normal 91 octane is 5% Ethanol (not all stations)

We can buy 98 with up to 10% ethanol. i try not to buy that.

we only have Shell, BP and a few independents.

The beast is in for a service on the 15th. Knock sensor will be on the list.

thnks!

Well its just started again. Was ok for a while after the clutch but since then its got worse. Dealers has NFI idea - claimes its not happening. I reckon its Ultimate 98 and i am trying other 98 fuels....

i am not convinced BP 98 is 98....

ive heard it ping before up hill full throttle. its distinct, not very loud though, I know it from my turbo audi days when I used to actually measure that crap.

I dont have any codes or warnings however. I doubt it would be fruitful to try and get the dealer to do anything ever as it is very elusive.

I havent been able to recreate it, maybe it is fuel dependent.

i think it maybe more common than many think, its just not that noticeable unless the windows are down and you know what sound to look for, its not pinging continuously or even for a long enough duration for me to really notice it. In fact I havent heard it for awhile now and its warm out.

I don't think the M5 "pings at all"

My ECU is tuned for 98 Octane RON ( 93 US standard ), and I run on 95 RON ( 91 US standard ) on a regular basis... NO pinging whatsoever! Loss of power? YES! But not pinging or detonating!

Our cars have knock sensors, they will re-tard timing upon sensing detonation!

I noticed pinging on and off and start using chevron for 2 months and it stopped

Funny no one has tried changing out the spark plugs, as essentially these are our knock sensors... Mine is pinging too and after a little thought I could not understand why the ecu was not retarding. As I can get it to ping constantly. But if the ecu is not realising the ping then it will not do sh$%.

So I am changing out the spark plugs and will report back to let you know what happens...

I have the same condition. I thought plugs might be the cause so I changed them - no improvement. Also, I notice mine will only make the noise if the car is fully warmed up. Even if only slightly under temp, I can be at almost full throttle, and no noise whatsoever. And then, it only does it under load. Sounds like pinging or rattling. Really confused. No codes, no nothing. Hope someone has some luck figuring this one out.

Ok this is not what I wanted to hear. However i'm sure I will get to the bottom of my pinging..... Hopefully. Tell me more so even with octane booster still no joy?

Also what tests have you guys done other than check codes?

Also what is the mileage on your cars? Lets figure this out as it is really pÂŁ%sing me off. If our cars are knocking standard, imagine what would happen with a tunehmmm

I had pinging and the cause was a slipping clutch. Apparently under load the clutch slipped slightly. The system detected low power (to the wheels) and was advancing the timing to try and make up for it. The only detectable slipping was a clutch chatter just off the line, but we determined that it was slipping slightly at acceleration.
It was a trick diagnosis but after new clutch. No more ping
This was after I messed around with different gasolines. BMW calls for using top tier gasolines, they list the brands.
