30 seconds.. thats all you need especially on cold start ups, when the car starts up at over 1000RPM. I usually let it fall below 1000RPM before driving off

I got told by a BMW Employee that the worst thing you can to to a M is to stand still.. - i guess this is the most appreciated news for all of us.

In the following scenario you can do a lot of damage to the car.

Picture that you push the car on the Autobahn / Track... the worst thing you can now do is to stand still in order to park or let say top up petrol. The chances that you damage something are higher than from the actual ride.

I got advised to warm it up 10-15 minutes, after the driving session - let it cool down by driving normal for another 10-15 minutes.

appetizer - main course - desert .. dont go for the fastfood if you dont have to

Guys I have one rule of thumb, I let the car stand for about 30 seconds until I see the RPMS start going down from I think its 2300 dropped to 1800. The second the RPMS drop just a bit I start driving low rpms until I see the 8250 rpm allowed. This rule of thumb kept my other cars in mint condition and never had any kind of engine problems.

You are always supposed to start and drive. Many people think that by waiting for the tacho to climb for the oil, the car is warm but it isn´t. You also have oil in the diff and gearbox and that gets warm by only driving ofc.

Depending on temperature outside, I can drive up to 30 min before hitting it to 8250 rpm.

I do that everytime, just cruise for about 15-20 minutes after some hard driving and let the car cool down before turning it off.

Yes, get in and go.

The issue with warming the car at idle is that NONE of the other components are warmed. If you allow the engine to warm to normal temperature and then blast off down the autobahn, the gearbox and differential are still COLD! So, follow the instructions in the manual and you'll be fine.

If it is the first cold start of the day, I might let the engine run for about 1 minute while the RPM drops below 1000 and the idle smooths out, then I go. I usually use the time to make sure I have everything I need before I leave home or to lock up the house.
