I start mine up and warm it by keeping the revs between 7,000 and 8,000 rpm's for the first 10 min. it warms quickly....

I just start it and follow the moving redline (sort of). I try to keep it below 3000 or 3500 until the oil temp gauge starts to register, and then I slowly move the RPM's up, usually keeping it 2000 below the "redline." Once the redline has receded all the way and the oil temp gauge reads between the 210 mark and the mark to the left of the 210 gauge (technically 7 o'clock I guess), I figure it's ok to let her rip.

i believe most bmw's are recommended to start driving shortly after startup.
i remember reading that on my old 325 few years ago as well as on my dad's old 7 series.

Definitely start and go,otherwise the temperature of the oil in your gearbox will be low and your engine oil temp will be 180-200F and you will break your gearbox soon . You have to start moderately and warm altogether engine, differential and gearbox.

Thanks , great idea! I'll be sure to try that, do a few launch controls, and bounce off the limiter to warms things up even faster. If I am good, can you bring me a new replacement engine this X-mas (preferably the Dinan stroker)?

Start and go, yes. Start and fly, no. I keep it under 3500 rpms until the car has fully warmed up and then I have at it. Picked this up from the board. Ever since I started really warming her up properly, I have notice a very significant decrease in oil consumption.

X-Mas? I'm thinking end of June.

I start driving once the iDrive boots up and keep the car under

3500 rpm's until the oil temp is about 180 or so.
