I'm currently looking into upgrading my brakes but just from a performance perspective as I can't lock-up (activate the ABS) when running on Toyo R888 tyres. Also in the process of seeing how hard I could brake, my front dsics took a real beating and are covered in half inch hairline cracks radiating from all the holes.
I've been in contact with AP Racing about their J hook brake discs but they actually advised against them for a road car, this is what they said. (they also sent a couple of the recomended discs on an M5 I noticed the Pirelli Corsa tyres)
We don’t recommend the J Hook motorsport, extreme disc face pattern for road applications! Reason being the grooves can exacerbate brake noise, not a problem on a race car but not desirable on a sports saloon! Also the closed ends of the J Hook grooves can cause brake dust to collect and produce a ripple effect on the disc face. Again not an issue on a race car where discs are replaced frequently, but on a road car where 20,000 plus is achievable on a disc this type of wear isn’t acceptable. J Hooks are able to improve initial Bite on a brake system fitted to a fully sorted race car, but it’s very doubtful that the softer set up of a road car could benefit from them
Hence the reason we opt for the T2 grove pattern on the sports saloons e.g. M5 / RS4 / XJR etc. The 2 interwoven triangles cover the face of the swept disc face and because their direction is more random than a straight groove, resonance or droning that can be an issue with grooved discs whilst under braking is eliminated.

E60 M5 in Sepia Metallic with Amarone/Amarone
AP racing makes fantastic brakes (If I needed something more than my OEM Brembo's on my Infiniti, it'd definitely be a 6 piston front / 4 piston rear AP racing setup), but I absolutely despise their color choice for the black calipers. Having yellow letters is so terrible I can barely stand it. And unfortunately, cause I'm not the red caliper type of person, I'm stuck with two undesirable color combos with AP racing calipers, so I typically look at Brembo first. Plus, as another factor, the AP Racing letters on the calipers look somewhat cartoon-ish. (I know these are some stupid reasons, but if I'm paying 7-8 grand for brakes, I want to be happy in every way).
Second, I'm a bit partial to Brembo for whatever reason. So, if given the choice, I'd definitely put on some nice lightweight 20" rims with a Brembo 405mm setup inside.
