ipod adaptor..what choices do I have??

I have an 1/06 M5 and want to use my ipod. I know that BMW makes an adaptor that I can get on ebay for around $250, but I heard there are drawbacks to this make. I am not quite sure what the drawbacks are, but even the service rep wasn't so thrilled.

I have heard about dennison but it seems to be around $450 which is a little high for me...

Any other options out there.

Also, I am confused as to whether or not I will have to do any idrive updating to get any system to work...All help is appreciated..

I have a 06 and the BMW aux port part is about $77, the install is about $280 which includes the software upgrade. Then all you need is the cable link and you're in...also you keep your cd changer

BMW makes a kit, it eliminates your cd changer in the glove box and incorperates an ipod into your glove box....they have to reprogram your car and the ipod works in conjunction with your idrive....I like it, it works great...don't miss the 6 disc...still have the single one.

I believe dealer quoted me $300 parts and $300 labor to put the iPod kit in. You can access it with idrive.
I am currently using AUX input with my iPhone. The downside is you have to take your eye way off the road to select songs. Our '06 CD changer does not play mp3 so it's only a bit better than useless.

I'm in the same boat as you. I have CDC, and would rather have an integrated ipod controller. User reviews on the "OEM" kit are all over the place - some hate it (slow, 250/500 song limit, etc.) others are okay with it. I have a feeling I won't know if I can live with it unless I try it. One dealer quoted by $500 out the door ($300+.75 hrs+tax). Another one quoted $800 out the door, so shop around.

I'd consider the Dension except there are some nasty bug issues, and it isn't clear that they have been resolved. mObridge makes an adapter as well, but it sells for around $500, and there aren't enough reviews to be sure how well it works in the long run.

I'd love to hear which way you decide to go, and whether it works out for you.

I'm with unfoundhorsepower on this one.. The OEM kit that goes in the glove box works fantastic for me. I can't say anything on the song limits issue b/c I only have one playlist I listen to right now, but the fact that it can be controlled with the i-drive is a must have.

The issue with the OEM is that it can be painstakingly difficult to find a song via the idrive. Having to rotate through has generated many complaints. And since there is a song limit, some have to resort to multiple playlists.

That being said, unless there is a more cost-effective alternative, I may be leaning towards them OEM. I don't see a need for using my CDC these days anyways.

Other thoughts?

It is a matter of getting used to the i-drive setup. Instead of searching by song, which unfortunately is alphabetized, I usually just search by band or play list. That seems to help me find what I'm looking for faster. But I understand where you are coming from. I just never saw any other option that I liked better.
