If so, the most important thing is to enjoy yourself, don't overdrive and if it is availble, take some tuition. I still go out with the instructors, it is good to get any tips etc.
Most important thing and you must not forget. Take some pics and post them here

I have done track days for years just not anything with 500hp and 4000 pounds I was thinking using DSC until I get a feel for the car more and maybe a few track days like that and just run S5 mode
Good thing with the M5 is that you have a choice with the traction
traction on
MDM
traction off
I personally use MDM the first few laps of the day then take it off, but it will allow you to experiment a little.
The main problem is the weight. This will cause the outside edge of the outside front tyre to wear prematurely. You can help to reduce this, the M5 does allow you to change the camber, there is a small pin in the top of the front strut mounts, if you remove this, it will allow the top of the strut to move towards the engine and hence increase the negative camber. If you take it to a good tyre shop they should be able to do it.
I still remember my first trackday in the M5, the only main issue I had was tyre wear, but the track surface I was on was rought concrete.
You may just want to take the car in stock set-up first though, as it will allow you to make the changes that you want, every driver / track is different etc.
The most cost effective brake upgrade would be to change the fluid to Motul RBF600.
Im getting ready for track season but still have several weeks to go. I tracked the M5 last year for the first time. Mainly, I had issues with the brakes and fading.
This year, I plan to run ATE superblue, add stainless lines, and am possibly adding the PAGID pads that are used on the N-Ring Taxi. The pads are pretty pricey but short of doing a big brake kit, I think will be worth it. Would love to hear how it goes and snap some pics!!!

Is the ATE superblue road legal? I'm not 100% sure, but I seem to remember they did another version that definately was.
Other fluids are the castrol SRF brake fluid and the Motul RBF 600.
Im not sure if the ATE superblue is road legal. Ill find out from my mechanic to see if he recommends it for street use or if I have to bleed it when im off the track.
After doing the BMW M performance school- I would not take off DSC at all. Leave in MDM mode. Unless you are 95%+ sure of where the car will go and can control understeer/oversteer at speed and have practiced on open track/road -DO NOT TURN IT OFF.
Its just not worth it- Can you go faster? maybe a little - Is this a race with a cash prize-NO So its not worth the chance of wrecking 100k
Just my 2 cents after driving M3/M5/M6 with DSC on and off on a track with instructors
