Not really, just keep the posts relative to your actual business standing and keep all government opinions neutral. Very simple. We do not all have to talk about BMWNA, BMW or the M division when we discuss M5's, M6's or M3's. Same concept.

You have a point and I rephraced my sentence. You know what I mean (this is not a republican vs demokcratic discussion thread).

Actually the MAJORITY does NOT elect our Presidents! It is done so with the Electoral College. Without boring all with a civics lesson, lets keep our arguments in line when calling others out. That argument was true, Bush would not have been the succeeding President

I don't defend Ranger by any means. But it is best to read and simply agree to agree of disagree. This can be done without constant tit fot tat!

As for the hurricane, I assume you are referring to the media directed opinions of Katrina. Once again, basic understanding of how the States and the Federal Government work will remind you that the Feds could not issue assistance until the Governor of the State requests. If you recall, Governor Blanco took a couple of days before she was willing to relinquish power to the Feds by declaring a State of Emergency! There are protective statues for the benefit of the Independent States. Once again, look at the bigger picture and choose your arguments wisely.

Opinion, Bush ranks as the second worst President of all time after Jimmy Carter. Yes, I have lived through many administrations since Eisenhower. I was of age when the protests of the Johnson and Nixon Administration were widely challenged. To say we have to accept the elected Commander in Chief is anti democratic. Once again, my opinion.

We can and always should question those in power. It is a matter of doing such with respect. Its a two way street however, the politicians need to respect the people. ALL of them, not just the ones they feel voted for them!

On the physician side of the health care business, I am starting to see some changes. I am seeing more patients who have lost their jobs and can not afford deductibles or even treatment. The effects have not been nearly as bad or broad as most other businesses as of yet. However, I am worried about potential changes to Medicare, including health care rationing, etc... Changes in Medicare policy (usually for the worse) are generally followed by the commercial insurance counterparts. If this happens then I will surely feel more economic impact.

My family run business (Civil, Structural, Geotechnical & Environmental Engineering Consultants) has been suffering badly since April 2008, we fell off a cliff that nobody saw and we're still falling!

About 90%+ of our work came from the UK's top house builders, many of which have now folded, merged, downsized, etc. Almost all the house builders stopped work on all UK sites last Summer and I had to make 1/5th of my team redundant. Since then we've been busy tidying up loose ends with current projects and most importantly I've been getting my staff out training and learning new skills so that we can offer a more varied bundle of services to any remaining clients.

We took the decision to enforce "short time" for the remaining workers with everybody going from a 40hr week to a 30hr week as of Jan 2009 and kept our fingers crossed. Several tenders for new work came in but offering a huge discount on fees wasn't enough to secure some of them and even with the Bank of England base rate cuts the market was still stagnant.

Fortunately we've since secured a few new sites and the housing market at least looks like it's bottomed out and starting to make a come back, slowly! We've cut back on all expenditures except for the marketing budget, which we've more than doubled, rushed to get a website up and running and now branching out to make some new connections and broaden out client base and sod's law over the last few weeks my employees have had to do some overtime to get reports out on time.

What happens over the next 12 months is anybody's guess though.

PS - shameless plug but if you are involved in the the UK housing market, house building, planning consultants, architects or property development please feel free to get in touch!

Hey Neil, hope things work out ok, break a leg and all that...

Housing market is a PITA, has been for some time, took us a couple of years to sell a house we kept after moving in 2006, we were doing Holiday Lets from it but were glad to see the back of it in March 2008 and think we were very very fortunate with what happened since.

E60man, where are you based? I'm just down the road from the Persimmon Head office in York, I met Mike Allen and David Smith years ago ( around 1996 ) when I did their original website, they were really nice guys.

My business developed into mostly low cost web hosting and domain registration and things have been ok so far, as Scoopz mentioned, companies that were not on the web are now doing so. So we're gaining just as many as we loose. I've also approached suppliers and been able to get MUCH better deals with network providers which will allow us to offer more services. So far things are working out, though we have been much more aggressive with marketing, offering better deals etc.

On a personal note, we've had building work going on in our house for about 6 months now, mostly modernising and fixing loads of problems in a 170 year old house that hasn't been loved in decades and we'd love to see an end to this, but it is a great time to get work done. We've had some amazing deals, I was fortunate to be able to pay for labour and then either get the builders to buy things at cost, or buy the stuff myself much cheaper. Some amazing deals to be had. I've been able to negotiate better than trade discounts (thanks to the Internet) The builders keep cracking jokes about hearing me squeak when I walk.

So if anyone is putting off building work and has the money, start it now and save yourself a fortune !!!

Good luck guys! Does the UK suffer from the double bubble like the US? Housing value and Credit crunch?

I really hate to bring up anything political, but I am amazed that people actually blame Obama. When did a lot of your businesses take a downturn, I'm almost sure it wasnt only in the last 5 weeks while he was president. Why not put this on the shoulders of the President who was in power for the majority of this economic downturn. Just trying to bring some objectivity to the argument. And since when are you judged by your first 30 days, I always thought 100 was the first benchmark.

Yes... Seems like everyday there is more financial bad news, most recent being a bank loosing about £10bn (pounds), my neighbour works for that bank and I've been searching their house to see if I can find it.

As the others have mentioned, property does seem to be levelling off, I keep my eye on property and have noticed many more properties under offer which is a good sign for the next couple of months.

Reading all the doom and gloom in the papers I'm surprised it's not much worse (damn newspaper).

How about Canada?
