I'm ready to replace my rubber, right now they are the continentals that came on them. Any recommendations for more performance or should I stick with the stock?

Michelin PS2s. In my opinion. night and day difference from the contis to the PS2s.

Go with PS2s. They're a grippier tire and OEM in Europe. I'd just change all four, otherwise you'll be lumbered with Contis even longer. I'm just about to do this.

One thing, make sure to get the BMW-specific PS2s as others are made for Ferraris etc. The BMW versions are marked with a star

The most popular tires for the beast are the Michellin PS2s. I currently have them. The grip is way better than the Continentals. However, considering that I live in a very hot & dry climates (extremly slippery roads) even the PS2s is not helping me with the grip. I'm constantly getting wheels spins even in 4th gear. It does sometimes get quite tricky & dangerous in addition to feeling that major power is lost. I'm thinking of getting the Toyos R888 on the rears (295/30-19). I've heard they make a night & day difference on slippery roads. Time will tell. I'm not sure how the roads are in LA, but most probably the PS2s would the best choice for you. Wishing you all the best!

I'm trying a set of Kuhmo's. For the mileage I drive (12,000miles) and front/rear installed for $888 I have no complaints. Quiet, nice handling(not as razor sharp as PS2's) and comfortable at 160mph. I'm changing tires every 14-15 months so if I don't like them later on i'm not losing anything. The conti's got really noisy toward the end of their tread life(got 17,000miles out of them).
It all comes down to how you use them. I commute and do some spirited driving at times. Anything more aggressive goes to the track and saving $700 buys me a set of track shoes.

On my 996 turbo, I went from Conti's to PS2's and I had much better wear on the tires on the PS2's. I could get 5000 miles on the Conti rears but I could get 10,000 miles on the PS2 rears. They are also quieter. However, On the M, I don't really like how round the side walls are when mounted. My fronts are fine but I am looking at new rears soon after only 6000 miles on the factory conti's.

I've heard good things about the toyo 888's. Anyone else?

I couldn't get to the tire shop this morning. I'm interested in hearing about the Toyo 888s... anybody have any good info with regards to M5 performance?

edit: I'm not sure I can find the exact toyos to fit, no need in taking a chance with something as important as rubber so I'm back to the PS2s. Tomorrow will get em done.

IMO Continental Tires are exclusivley for those of us who have never experienced the ride of Michelin Pilot Sport 2's. Factory equipment on my m5, were Conti's, and hated every bit of it. Tires were cupping at 9 thousand miles, Conti blamed alignment issues with the m5 but the best Hunter equipment showed that after 9g miles camber & castor was as close to zero perfect as possible, it was the tires.

Replaced with PS2's what a tire.

We've done a lot of the T1Rs, most guys locally seem to be happy with them. I have a set on my E92 M3 as well.

The R888 on street use would be worn before you even break them in....

I have run both Conti's and PS's and PS2's on past cars. On the 535d conti's and PS2's were like chalk and cheese - can't remember the longevity of each but feel and performance wise PS2's won hands down - they grip better, steer better and stop better. My M5 came with PS2's and I wouldn't hesitate to purchase again.

In terms of price, not sure what the score is over the water, but in the UK there are many on-line brokers poping up who simply farm the daily price increase / decreases. I always use a firm called etyres.....they come out and fit the tyres at work or on your drive.....

Todays price for example for rears is £299.90 / $430.37 per corner and fronts is £273.80 / $391.64 per corner

Conti's can be had for under £200 / $276 per corner for the rears and £185 / $264 per corner from the big brand UK fitters such as KwikFit - these are on offer though - PS2's from the same place will set you back £335 / $479 per corner!

Same all over I guess - make sure you shop around; using all of the above, if I was out for 4 corners today I could spend as little as £770 / $1,100 or as much as £1,340 / $1,915!

Ok, so I got my Contis changed out to Mich PS2s with the "star". American Tire Depot in Glendale on Central Ave. Patrick did them for $1786 out the door in 38 minutes, great guy and good to his word. I'd recommend them to anyone in the area.

Tires in Glendale, Eagle Rock, Tires in Los Angeles, Discount Tires

Here are the old rears:

Here are the new PS2s complete with the Star!

From what my limited experience tells me is that they seem a bit grippier, though I am not a real race car driver.
