I have recently been forced to put the winter tires on due to the cold temperatures of late. Why do I live in Toronto again...
Ever since the winter wheels were installed I have been experiencing a strange vibration through the steering wheel. I thought perhaps one of the front wheels needed to be rebalanced.
After spending a quick $20 to have the front wheels rebalanced I still feel the vibration. By the way the vibration is only felt between 80km - 125km.
Is it possible for the rear wheels to cause this vibration through the steering wheel if one of them were out of balance?
I was also wondering about tire wear and rotation...I noticed when I went to install the wheels they were labelled strange. What I mean by this is, it looks as though the wheels might have been rotating the wrong direction during the winter last year. I believe the BMW dealer I had installed the new tires last year put them on the wrong way (ie: rotating the wrong direction)
Your thoughts please.

If the tires are directional it will say so or show a direction of rotation on the outside of the tire... . .More than likely if your getting a steering wheel shimmy it could be caused by any number of reasons here they are....#1
Improper ballance, or improper ballance job. #2 Bent wheel, they could be ballanced but the wheel could be out dynamically,
making the wheel shimmy....#3 The wheels if they are after market, they might have hub centric adapters for the front and
rear hubs one could be missing. #4 maybe there is a ply seperation and there is a large buble in the thread. Maybe if it
shakes only when you put the brakes on it could be bad rotors....and finally...THE MOST important factor that could cause
this is........improper wheel torque, over tightening of the wheel can warp the hub and the wheel could shimmy....check for
proper inflation too!!! Well good luck...what i suggest is re-torque the wheels and put it up on the lift spin the wheels and
take a look to see if a wheel is bent...

Or it could just be as simple as they are not centred on the hub correctly.
Although I imagine the wheel shop would have fitted them if they balanced them? If not ensure that there is nothing behind the wheel that would prevent it sitting flush on the hub. I have noticed BMWs seem to build up a lot of crap around where the wheel slips onto the hub so scrape this away and refit the wheel and most importantly tighten the nuts correctly, i.e move to the furthest away nut each time, not the one next to whatever one you are currently one.
Failing all this your wheels are buggered but I cant understand how they balanced if this is the case.

Chris hub centric rings might be missing if they are after market wheels.....allready said it...thanks

Gez I would be really pissed with the dealer, and pretty hard case to argue a year later!
Dont know about damage to the tyre, I have done it on several cars and it never made a difference.
Did you keep the tyres inflated during the year when not in use?
