What is that fake key in the glove box for?

There is a fake key that clips into a slot inside the passenger glove box compartment. What is its purpose?

Thanks,

It's the valet key. I've never used it myself so don't really know how
it works.

But I assume if you break in to the car you cannot use it?

It is only a fob shell, there is nothing in it. The purpose is for your third spare (stick) key (not the other two fobs). You all have a third plastic stick key that you can use to open the doors etc and that stick key fits into the empty fob shell that sits in your glove compartment. I think the User Manual recommends you keep the stick key separate from this fob shell just in case if your two fobs don't work/missing, and you are locked out. Then you can use the fob shell to protect the third stick key.

Haha...the interesting thing is that the old grumpy bastards are evenly
spread across the US. Unfound in the North East, M5 Ranger in the
South, and DRM in the west. I guess this forms some kind of
equilibrium in the M universe.

I keep the small wallet sized key in my wallet at all times.

I've had to use it once or twice when I've given the main set of keys to my girlfriend and she's then gone off with them by mistake. Simply remove the small wallet key from wallet, insert into driver door lock and unlock car, the alarm sounds but reach over into the glove box, get the key shell, inset wallet sized key into the empty shell in the glovebox and then insert that into the ignition, the alarm stops sounding and you can start the car.

Try it yourself, really quite a good idea! I have also tried inserting the empty shell into the ignition but without the transponder that is in the wallet sized key it's quite literally just an empty plastic shell.
