There are two different issues here:
1. Do not use a different type of oil than prescribed by BMW for warranty reasons. If the engine fails at some point (and they don't very often) BMW Germany will look into the matter with great interest. If they discover a non approved oil you'll lose the warranty. In Europe they don't even have to prove it was caused by the oil.
2. Can the engine run on a different brand of oil? yes of course it can. As long as you stick to 10W60 and use proper brands, the engine will be fine.

Personally I simply stick to Castrol and import a box with 6 bottles from Germany with a 60% discount. I always carry a quart in my car.

Two very valid points - but for the fact that I'm no longer under warranty I would surely think twice before putting non-Castrol oil.

Castrol for me, don't see the reason to bother with something different..

Elf makes some great oils in Europe but unfortunately are not approved for the car
Shell also makes some great oils for Ferrari, again not approved for the car
