We did one run with another M5 with 19' wheels which had Dnnan exhaust and soem kind of ECU flash.

To be fair we should have raced the M5 Touring or RS6 Sedan. But I would say the difference should not have been his large in the summer since at thsi run it was quite cold, between 5-10 degrees benefetting the turbocharged cars.

Gustav - can I make this a request for the next run?

Can you explain this "material affect on acceleration"?

the RS6 Avant is just a beautiful car

Ok...I won't wait for your "official" answer. I believe that before someone makes a statement like "Those 20" wheels will have a material affect on acceleration"...they should at least academically look at if it holds true.

For those thinking that the 20" wheels weigh more...here is exhibit A: a replica M6 wheel in 20" weighing in at 27lbs

BMW M6 Style Wheel 18''/19''/20'' Silver/Gunmetal

Exhibit B: People reporting that the stock 19" M5 wheels weigh 28lbs.

Stock wheels and seat weight? - bimmerfest - BMW Forums

For those that feel that the wheel size will greatly impact gearing:

Exhibit C: A comparison of the effective gear ratios of stock M5 wheel (285/35ZR19 vs prospective 295/30ZR20)

Exhibit D: A comparison of the effective gear ratios of stock M5 wheel (285/35ZR19 vs prospective 305/25ZR20)

Not sure what tire sizes but it is doubtful that it "materially" impacted anything. If the tire height is smaller...it could give it a better effective accelerating gear ratio...

Nice exhibits Tom It is also relevant where the mass is focused on the wheel and the weight of the tyre.

Anyhow we did the run with another M5 so its not a problem.

What could have affected th eoutcome to the RS6 advantage is that it was very cold, between 5 and 10 degrees Celsius. I do not beleive an RS6 or RS6 Avant could replicate this a summer day.

I agree weather has a much greater impact on turbo cars. It is starting to get colder and colder over here... and my V12TT loves it... anyone want to race?

Gustav, is my understanding correct?

This RS6 (on stock 20") also raced a tuned M5 sedan on 19" with Dinan exhaust + ECU and won.

Hi,

Sorry I missed the event yesterday - it looks like a great time as always.

A friend came by with a RS6 he borrowed from the dealer. A couple of observations when comparing to my M5 Touring (tuned by RPI and Supersprint):

- RS6 is unbeatable from standing start. It was raining today and it was totally impossible to have a chance against it.
- RS6 has increadible traction and it is very difficult to force any oversteer. M5 would not have a chance against it on a wet/snowy track.
- the rolling start were more equal. When I used S5 I was barely hanging on to him between 50/100-200 km/h. When I used S6 I was even up to 200 and then started to pull. Between 200 and 300 km/h, the Touring was faster.

The RS6 is:
- much quiter than standard M5 and dead silence compared to my Supersprint Touring
- feels more like a S6/S8 type of car.
- Steering is not as direct as in the M5
- Brakes a bit weaker than my standard discs with Pagids.
- gear paddles sits too low on the steering wheel forcing you too shift with your pinkies. It was very hard to manually change gears as the gearbox changed automatically as soon as you were in the readline area and the lack of engine noise made it hard to hear when it was time to shift.
- really missed HUD in the RS6. The speedometer sits to the right and at 200+ it is impossible to get an accurate reading as the meter hides behind the steering wheel/your hands.

Final verdict?
- RS6 in the fall, winter and on the ice
- M5 in the spring, summer and on the track

Thomas
