What the heck?!?? I'm sorry to hear you guys are having problems.
I don't get why Dinan isn't all over this. If I were in your situation I
would definitely ship it to Dinan. I would have low confidence that the
dealership would figure out the problems. Dinan should be stepping
up and making this process as easy as possible for you guys. I don't
get why you have to ship the car out on your dime but unfortunately
if that's what it takes I think you have to do it.
BTW, perhaps this should be a separate thread. I had no idea you
guys were having problems until it was mentioned in a different thread.
I know I have said that before but it would be more cost-effective if Dinan send their tech(s) to diagnostic the issue. We are talking about two strokers engine within the vicinity. Basic mechanic tools should be easily find locally, maybe proprietary laptop and their brain/experience need to be sent from Morgan Hills. It definitely would be cheaper than ship two cars.
Hopefully just sw related, sorry but man, I can't stop thinking about Dinan TB issue.
Good Luck to both of you. But I think you need Dinan more than luck this time(j/k)

Just thinking of a similar situation with an Audi - fuel strainer/sock?? Is there anyway to determine what your fuel pressure is at WOT?? Definitely sounds like a fuel delivery problem.

Ok...that sounds a little better. I still think they should pick up
the bill for shipping if it comes down to that.
Good luck Darren.

Their first reaction was "bad gas", even though I explained it was affecting two cars that are parked in different areas of the metroplex (about as far apart as San Jose and San Francisco for example) and use different gas stations, and the fact that I just took a road trip over the past weekend and filled up at probably 3-4 different gas stations during the excursion.
So bad gas was not necessarily a likely culprit. Regardless, the next day I filled up at a Chevron and had a few gallons of race fuel put in to top of the octane level. Dinan also shipped a new tune they had been using on Steve's car only which was installed on Thursday of last week.
With the new ecu tune nothing changed even though I can see slightly more advanced ignition timing, the lack of performance is still the same.
I had my dealer replace the MAF sensors Saturday morning at the suggestion of another BMW tech shop (Performing Imports in ATL) which seemed a plausible solution, but unfortunately that didn't fix it either.
Steve Dinan personally offered to send me a new motor during my conversation with him Tuesday afternoon. I may follow-up with them on that offer. I'd rather go that route than send them the car, unless of course they want to pick up shipping.
I'll keep everyone posted as we progress through this situation.
I think this speaks confidence for Dinan: sending you a new engine on the fly.
Regarding transportation vs flying a mechanic I can understand that they would like to have the car inhouse where all of the competence is: Frank the engine guy, Steve himself and more.

I'll post my most recent dynojet graph tomorrow and you'll see something very interesting. The line is very erratic and squiggly. Never seen a dyno like that before.
The guy doing the dyno instantly thought it looked like my engine was having "valve float" problems. This occurs when the valve springs are not strong enough to hold the valves shut during the appropriate part of their open/close cycle.
Another plausible option and will pass this along to Dinan.
