Who has been over 175 mph with their M5?
I am considering entering a standing mile event and want to know how fast to expect the car to be going at the traps. Who has driven a stock (or stock-ish) M5 without the limiter over 175mph and how much distance did you use up?

I did exactly that with my completely stock M5 earlier this month,
standing start over 1-mile. I had C A Automotive (UK) remove the limiter on the car but otherwise I was completely stock. The limiter used to kick in at 171mph on the HUD, about 165mph GPS.
There's a thread complete with photos and results here:
Fighting Torque 2008
The 1 mile had been reduced to 7/8ths mile due to damaged cables and my official speed was 168.6mph but I had a GPS data logger onboard which logged my vmax as 175.2mph (about ~182mph on the HUD) but this was after the 7/8ths finish line. The runway was 2 miles long so I kept on it for a short while but not too long:
I was using my launch control on the day which really did help me get off the line as quick as possible but if you've got the crippled US Launch control I'd suggest getting to grips with the mash-the-throttle method.
My results from the day HERE but bear in mind many of the cars above/below me were highly modified, some 996TT running 650bhp, CLS55AMG @650bhp, Supras at 55bhp, etc
I wouldn't even give entering another thought, jump on it and book it you'll have an absolutely amazing day and get to test your car at high speeds in a safe environment.
NOTE - If you've not done so already, make sure you remove your limiter!

Well the event I want to do requires a roll cage for anything over 135 mph so it requires some serious thought before I jump in... but thank you for the info it is very helpful.

 Really! That's a shame, I wouldn't consider installing a roll-cage just for the one event that's crazy
My only entry requirements were the car had to be road legal and I had to wear an approved crash helmet, nice and easy

Hey Alaris where will your event be held and is there a sanctioning body?
BTW the issue of the roll cage sounds like a safety feature but I would never destroy the M5 by installing a cage.
On rolling start runs I've had the M5 to 185 to 190 mph.
The guys in the NY area have videos up to 200 mph.
Good luck

It's in Maxton NC sanctioned by ECTA. They are serious about safety gear.

Its probably more a liability thing than a concern for safety. Their lawyers make them do it.
135mph in the US requires a roll cage whereas they do 135mph all day every day on the autobahn and hit 200mph in M6s like it was a Sunday drive....
Wait a minute! For RussRamz it was a Sunday drive at 200mph.

A better solution to "the need for speed" is a driving school. VIR has a 3/4 mile back straight. A stock E60 M5 can hit 150-160mph on that straight. My 550i easily hit 130mph+. Plus you then get to turn. Much more fun than just going straight. No cage required, just a helmet.
PS: After a few times at the track, it gets adictive. At that point a track car is recommended, with a cage, etc. But, I've done a dozen events with stock or nearly stock cars.
