Any former 911 owners trade in for an M5? thoughts?
I've got a '06 911, manual... thinking to go for a used M5. maybe '06 or '07.
originally i was thinking about going for a manual M5, but they seem difficult to come by, and also i'm a bit worried about difficultly reselling since it seems that most ppl prefer the smg. i think i need to test drive a smg and see for myself?
any former 997 owners switch to the M5? i'm worried i'm going to miss the 911. but, the M5 sure would be very convenient compared to the 911. any former owners w/ big regrets getting into an M5?

My brother switched from a 997 GT3 to a M5. But then he missed the lightness of the GT3 and went for a 996 GT2. One big reason was that when he took tha family for a trip, he couldnt enjoy the car because his wifey was on auto cut-off mode! Although the M5 is a fantastic car, you might miss the tossability of the Porsche. He just got another bimmer, a 535d. Man that monster has more torque than a M5! He put the M motorsport body kit. So now he has the best of both worlds. I myself am saving up for a 993.

I really depends on what what you want out of the car. I had E39 M5 with 996 and 997 and I really enjoyed driving M5 as a daily driver and P car for weekends. If you have a family, cannot go wrong with M5. Currently, I drive M6 and have 993 tt(Dyno at 520HP) for the weekend. As much as I love to drive 993 tt, I still prefer to drive m6 every day. It is much comfortable and pleasure to drive around the town and no one really bothers you. If I had to choose one car, it would be M5 or M6.

Funny you mention this. I had a guy walk up to me in the parking lot today and ask how I like the M5. Told him I loved it. He mentions he has a 997 and test drove an M5 last weekend and is getting one for sure. He says all he thinks about now is the M5.

I just got out of my 2003 996 turbo. I think it was a nice change. If you are driving a carerra or carerra s, then you will like the upgrade to the M5. If you have a 997 turbo or gt3, then keep your car. The best scenario would be to get the M5 and keep the turbo for weekends but...
Reality is they are 2 different cars. If you don't need 4 doors and need to haul kids around, then a porsche is the choice. Maybe you should consider a 997 turbo or gt3 as an option to an M5.

although i didn't trade my 911 for the m5, i have previously owned a 996 c4 and a 996TT. as you would suspect, the m5 is nowhere near as nimble, but it is straight line fast and can fit 4 adults very comfortably.
at the time i had an e39 m5 with the 911's. that was indeed the best of both worlds. when my 2nd child was born 2 years ago, we decided that the 911 was not practical and opted for a couple of sedans.

The Porsche and M5 are two different class of cars and serve different needs for its use.
I am fortunate to own both and love the experience.
These cars IMO can not be compared.
My 997 GT3 with 1/2 a tank of gas weighed 2,969 lbs. and makes 392 rwhp (460 bhp). This is a driving experience. The handling is outrageous. Now my M5 with all the mods is an insane straight line power experience.
I love them BOTH.

I traded in a 996 4S for the M5... had to pay some in between of course...
I was in a strange situation where I could only have one car (small garage)... but in most cases you shouldn't have to have to choose between a 911 and an M5... you choose both of them.

I miss my 997GT3 but the M5 suits my needs for now able to put my kids in the back. Nothing compares to the driving experience of the GT3.

+1. Totally agree with you Tony. I miss mine as well, but I was the primary user of the GT3 (even w/ my rear seats mod) so it was a bit selfish of me to have it around only for my use. Now I can throw the whole family in and together share the P500/S6 experience
BTW, did you get that front splitter?
