I think it is important to remember that the M5/M6 design is getting on in age. We have cars that set the bar. By the time the CTS-V is hitting the street in appreciable numbers, BMW will likely have a new standard setting beast to unleash.

There will always be a 'faster' and 'better' car. How long has it taken Cadillac and US auto makers in general to copy the M5 formula and get there with a competitive product. Cadillac is following the way, they're not leading...

Let's hope. In terms of cheap power, GM may have it all over BMW however.

But the word 'cheap' still comes to mind with GM. I'm guessing for most of us the workmanship and engineering of bimmers has always been a key factor in addition to standard-setting performance. GM (and the Caddy marque) carries a lot of baggage from the past that will have to be overcome with this crowd.

It would be interesting to know GMs targeted markets. They may not be projecting a significant upsetting of M5 loyalty, but rather, further validation of their marque as a serious sports sedan that will appeal mostly to the upwardly mobile boomers who have already been buying American.
