I was wondering the same. I have a tough time believing that BMW would go to the trouble of coming out for this, knowing the press it will receive, and would not shoe the car with PS2's. They are, after all, OEM on 2008 M5's (though early-build 2008's had Conti's).

My bad. Was under the assumption that all M5's wore Conti's. If M5's were on PS2's than kudos to the V albeit I'd never buy it.

Great showing by the M5. With only a 0.47 second difference, it is quite a stretch for R&T to call a clear winner. I can sleep well tonight.

Yeah, from the article:

Cadillac is the hungry challenger, making no secret that it has benchmarked the M5 in producing its new 556-bhp CTS-V, right down to specifying the same Michelin PS2

No matter what one thinks of the CTS-V, this kind of competition is, in the end, a good thing for BMW and ultimately us. BMW has become somewhat used to this competition for the 3 series and has responded (who thought we would see the 135/335/535 turbo engine - I did not). Now most of the lines including 5/7 series and possibly now the holy grail - Ms (!) - are coming under increased competition from Japanese marques, and now US companies (as least in theory - cross shoppers between BMW and Caddy are still going to be rare, at least in the near future). I'm going to test drive the V "just because", but have no plans to buy one. But *thank you* Cadillac for building this (particularly in today's economy, although obviously the car was basically done when energy costs started to increase). GM (IMO) has the powertrain down - now it's on to refinement and losing the image cast by years of underperforming, overpriced and underwhelming cars.

On a side note, looking at the interiors of the E60 and CTS-V...reminds me of elegant Danish furniture vs. Lazy-Boy. Caddy may not have gotten everything right, but they are trying.

Maybe I read this different than other people here, but I didn't get the impression there was any clear "winner". What I got from it was Cadillac clearly brought a contender that was well matched with the M5. There shouldn't be any sour grapes that the M5 "lost". Congrats to Cadillac for bringing some real competition in an elite class.

They were trading lap times back and forth on a new track with dirt and water on it that neither one had driven before and they only ran a few laps. Saying one car "beat" the other in this environment seems a little silly to me and I didn't get the impression Road & Track was even trying to make that statement themselves. Put two different drivers, swap cars, or change venues, and your results will jump all over the place.

They look pretty evenly matched to me, so it would just come down to preference. I look forward to seeing one on the track to have some fun with. I'm still happy with my M5, it's more my style, but I appreciate having some options.

They clearly stated that the CTS-V was the new king, but really, how many of us drive our cars the way they test them? In real world situations, the two are so close in comparison that its a drivers race. So unless I see a video that shows the CTS-V blowing the doors off of a M5, then in my opinion, its just a new competitive car, not the new king. Im a American car owner and was hoping the CTS-V would kill it so i could shut my friend up and bring the crown back home, but i need to see a real race.

Yes 0.5 second / lap is not much on a 2:40+ lap. PLus they mentioned the M5 may go faster...

Still it is good to see these types of American cars but hardly "sucking the doors off the M5".

I hope that BMW wakes up and sets the bar again in a couple of years.

I´m with you on this one but what I also would like to see is MANY tests, not just one.
