        Warranty Question

I have an 08 and im still under full BMW warranty... you know the little piece in the gas tank compartment that clicks in and out to hold the door (you push to release and push again and the door stays in)? Mine stopped releasing so I just pulled out the piece and want to replace it with a new one. Do I have to go through the entire process of scheduling and appointment checking the car in etc... to get this replaced under warranty. Or can I just walk into the parts dept with my vin# i.e registration and get the part... I can install myself?

I can totally understand why you'd want to avoid the dealer experience if you can. But I somehow doubt the dealer will make your life easier by letting you do something that makes perfect sense!

I think they have to go through all the motions in order to have a legit warranty claim with BMW. That might mean getting the car in the shop and having the technician type in the diagnosis and subsequent fix. Having said that, I have had experiences with Porsche service advisors going above and beyond the call of duty to preprint work orders, pull technicians out of the shop to eyeball problems and even perform minor adjustments/fixes in the drop-off area. So I think your success with trying to get through a dealer experience as fast as possible will depend directly on how cool or uncool your service advisor is! Good luck.

BMW NA requires all warranty claims entered into database.

If you have a good working relationship with part's counter & S.A., they should be able to fill out warranty work without leaving the car.

Ask nicely and you might get what you want.

I just had a side marker replaced. The SA (mine was not on duty that day) eyeballed it, typed it in to the computer, got my key to read the VIN and stuff and got the part out from the back himself and handed it to me. Quite painless... and the part was only 30 (22 after discount). The way I figure it, it is just principle.

Anyhow, all he asked for in return was a firm handshake and all "5s" when they call for the survey, which I'll be happy to do for him. The dealer needs to get reimbursed for the part... which is understandable.

I'm afraid if you want it replaced under warranty you'll have to schedule an appointment, drop it off, get your KIA rental car for the day , and fight traffic in the AM and PM to make it happen!

Find the part, buy it, and do it yourself!!!

Just combine the warranty work with your next major service..........I wouldn't be too concerned about locking the gas fill door, there's never enough gas in these monster's to steal anyway.
