On your best behavior around the BMW V10 cars

I took a typical Sunday drive today, about 100 miles round trip. There was a picture frame sale that my girlfriend wanted to go to...

But one phenomena that I have noticed lately driving my ///M car.... The only people that "try" to give me a ricer fly-by are the real slow sh*tboxes. Other slightly less powerful cars become deferential around the V10....

A couple of recent observations.

I don't drive too fast on the highways but I sure as heck exit and merge quickly. I merge from one highway onto another. I see this "M"45 ( I still laugh at an Infiniti "M")... weaving in and out of traffic as I look at where I want to merge.... I pass the M45 on the merge and the car slows right down and hunkers in behind me for a good 10 miles. No weaving, nothing.... I then exit the highway and then the M45 takes off like a slow bat out of hell and starts weaving again.

The other day, I was putting along in the fast lane (with no one behind me) and then I see a Cherokee SRT8 merge and it comes flying up my tailpipe. I naturally move over to allow the pass but not before I showed him that it was by choice that I moved over . He had to reach a good clip to match me and then once I braked, he passes me then slows down and behaves...we were putting along at just above the speed limit for a good 20 miles.

Anyone seeing good behaviour around the V10? Not that I would run with someone on the roads but the I guess these guys don't want to be embarassed?

Haha, that's funny.....yes, I was coming back on the freeway the other day.....light traffic.....and a Evo with about 4 guys slowly gets next to me with one lane between us......slightly behind.....then I notice him after a bit....and he pulls up next to me.....I glance over and they are all giving me the thumbs up with big grins....his car has all the obvious mods.....wheels, tires, suspension, etc......then he peels off to the offramp for another freeway and steps on it......Holy crap....he was wayyyyy faster than a M5...I've seen some 500 and 600+ rwhp Evo's and he was one of em....I wouldn't have stood a chance with him...but he was definatly showing me respect which was pretty cool....

Interesting observation. I think that's just how cops feel. Anyone that passes they feel is disrespecting them. Most people will just hunker down and cruise behind them until they exit, and then it's off to the races.

It's the damn Prius that crawl up your arse at +100 (didn't even know they could go that fast) only to leave them in the dust but if you do not continue to do a buck fifty the entire way here they come again doing everything they can to catch back up and pass you. Usually, if you finally let them pass they slow down and hold you up until you pass them again. Seriously not only the Prius, I see this all the time on long road trips with idiots that probably actually think they can hang. Total lack of respect and they don't get what you are trying to tell them when you pull away from them and leave them in the dust until you catch up to another cluster of traffic and here they come again very slowly doing all they can to catch up "like a slow bat out of hell" (LOL, love that one T bone)...

My wife and kids often try to entice me by saying something like "whoa that mini van just smoked you, you gonna let that happen?" Really it has gotten so bad that I can't let anyone pass me when they are in the car.

My family is not normal, BTW. I often find myself telling the kids "this is not a good example" "I have millions of miles under my belt. When you have millions of miles under your belt, do what you want" "Do as I say, not as I do". To put things in perspective, I don't do anything unsafe or stupid with or without them in the car. I just (on occasion) have to show them what the car is capable of. I know this is not a good example, but I think they get that. One day safely on the way to dinner I showed the family what the car can do in S6 at redline through the gears on the way to dinner. Funny thing was my daughter told me her adrenaline level went nuts and her hands were shaking. The family was sitting there in a rush of adrenaline laughing hysterically.

Gotta love this car...

T-Bone, you have it nailed. I have noticed this behavior from other sporty cars. Unfortunately those in econoboxes and mid 90s pickups seem not to know what the trunk badge means and follow dangerously close at highway speeds. I did a poetic brake check on a Focus driver on the 101 Friday night by way of discouragement.

I have also noticed that this car is unfortunately a complete c@ck magnet. Whenever I'm in slow traffic other guys slow and stare at the car and then me. This happens when I'm filling up at gas stations too. However, about 6weeks ago a 599GTB looked over and nailed while I was at the Chevron- sounded like heaven.

My worst experience of unwanted attention was Infiniti G35 driver who plagued me on Sunset Blvd. by slowing up-speeding off-slowing up all the time looking over at me. He did this for five minutes. My two friends in the car with me were most perplexed.

HaHaHaHa!!!

Sometimes, I just get a dumb akward stare and smile when I get out of the car and it is like they are waiting for me to say something or they are about to say something but they just continue to smile and stare. Kind of hard to explain, but it is just akward.

I actually had a young guy in a Z4 almost take out 2 cars to catch up to me. Then he cut me off unnecessarily and took off again. I really wonder about idiots like that.

Worse then the Prius is all the damn Scion TCs I see everyday with punks driving them like mad men. I would say I get one a week who pulls up on me and then takes off ahead weaving in and out of traffic. Save it for the track man. . . . .

I noticed most of the responses here are ppl from Cali. Yes, we have a lot of those young gun idiots around here. They always feel the need to "floor it" everytime they see a fast car.

To me, what's classic, is a variation of what happens to T-Bone. When I am on a surface street with very light traffic, there is always some G35 / Scion / Old Honda w/ Fart Can hunkering down behind me, or never passes me if they are on the other lane. This can go on for like blocks and blocks.... but as soon as I go and make a right turn or move into a left turn lane, I hear a amlified Torque-Converter-Slipping-Downshift from a 4" Fart Can as they do the ricer fly-by on me. You're so cool, Fonzie!

How about a dodge Ram SRT 10 coming along and thinks he can play with the other V10

The good news or the bad news for him was that he was no where to be seen on my rear view radar
