oil pump failure/engine replacement
7,400 miles and tick, tick, tick, so the usual Vanos issues and read all the threads but this one is different. When reported was assured, as some suggest, lifter bleed, no big deal and okay to drive. Reassured again when called a second time and therefore waited for oil change (yes, early at 7,500, but my call). Still felt uncomfortable and insisted oil and filter saved-- how can tick be anything other than metal on metal. Well, turns out "chipped teeth" from high pressure oil pump. Dealer acknowleged metal gear particles in pan. On Monday after three weeks will supposedly be ready with new, replacement engine installed. Asked for replacement to 2008. After all how can this not negatively impact market value. Asking also for renewed warranty and have yet to receive assurance-- under consideration by BMW "legal". This is my third BMW. Very distressing. Dealership has always been great. But this has got me rattled.

Why did the engine need replacement and not just the high pressure vanos pump.?

Well, with the broken or chipped teeth, metal fragments were circulated through the engine. I suspected this could be the case which is why I insisted the oil be saved. I would have had it tested. As it was, perhaps face with that prospect, or am I too skeptical, it was acknowledged fragments were in the pan. I know your 2007 was replaced but so far that option has not been offered to me. I also recall the thread with the blown engine and vehicle as opposed to engine replacement.

Are there not filters and strainers provided internally to prevent just this thing from happening?

For metal particles reach the filter and pan they first circulate through and among and hence damage the internal moving components. A mechanical engineer I had in the wings made various recommendations. We would have split open the filter, removed the paper cartridge, and laid it out in solvent. The oil would have been saved in order to be examined and tested by an outside, independent testing facility. However, after the oil was drained and metal gear particles from what had been the broken off "teeth" of the high pressure oil pump, were found in the base of the pan, the conclusion so obvious I had to proceed no further. The fact that those teeth became particles further demonstrates the point of the fact that they were circulated among moving metal parts-- in effect crushed and in the process damaging those components. Because of this testing of the oil would have demonstrated the presence of various alloys off internal components. In any case, as I say, we did not have to proceed any fur | | |
