There are variations in seats.

You have the 16-way standard seat, which is just a flat pad headrest, not adjustable, like every other car in the world, with an M logo in the middle. (No charge)

You have a 20-way multi-function seat, that if ordered with regular/full leather looks similar to the 16-way seat, with a flat-pad headrest that is adjustable and has an M logo, and active bolsters. (Option 4MA, charged)

You have a 20-way multi-function COMFORT seat, that was April 08 and EARLIER that had a cushion pillow on the lower-half of the headrest, similar to the 7 series and has no M logo. (Option 456, charged)

And now, as of April 08 and beyond, you have a 20-way multi-function COMFORT seat that REPLACED the old comfort seat headrest with the cushion. The NEW comfort headrest is a soft cushion, with no M logo, and it's slightly thicker, but it still adjusts like the one on the regular multi-function seat, that is, you can bring the sides of it inward to contour around your head. (The new option 456, charged)

Then, on top of the seat itself, you have the option of full leather, or perforated leather, which then affects if you can purchase vented seats or not. (Vented seats are not available unless you have the perforated leather).

Hope that clears up any questions.

OK. So:

Sports Seats (4MA) are available in perforated-Merino but NOT perforated-Merino full. If you want FULL leather, they are available but they are not perforated.

Does this mean that Sports Seats (4MA) with perforated-Merino (as shown in my attachment) are available with ventilation?

Don't understand why BMW can't put a few pictures of different seat options in the brochure, it would easily eliminate at least 5 threads on here, but hey, thank God for the forum!

I believe that seats pictured are definitely the seats to get on a 500HP M5. The comfort seats or very nice, but I don't think they feel any different than the ones shows in the picture. After all, they (comfort and 4MA) are both Merino leather, perforated or not.

This actually is only half true... the problem you have is your exterior color, Space Gray Metallic is the black sheep of the bunch, and you can not order full perforated leather with that body color (don't ask me why, I have no clue).

If you look in the back of an M5/M6 brochure there is a table, and that table covers what you can/can't get for each exterior/interior combo. You'll see that Space Gray Metallic gets screwed. (I know because I went through this exact same thing 2 months ago, I too wanted Space Gray Metallic, but I wanted vented seats more because I live in a hot climate.. so I opted for black sapphire exterior).

Back up and restart the session, then set it as a Black Sapphire exterior, and you'll see the full perf leather option become available. (It's lame, but blame BMW!).

So basically if you want full perforated leather, don't buy Space Gray Metallic

As far as comfort versus multi-function, seat-wise (as in options) they are the same. The difference is comfort seats are more plush as far as cushion/softness. Feature-wise they are identical (ie: bolsters, lumbar, movement, etc). It's easy to tell them apart if you have 2 cars side by side.

Thanks for the post. I agree with a lot of it.

However, while BMW say the sports seats and the comfort seats are both merino leather it must be a different type as the perf comfort seats leather is so much softer/expensive feeling. I like the style of the sports seats (have never felt the perf ones so maybe that's the distinction) but feel the better quality leather on the comfort seats is the only one worthy of a 100k vehicle.

So flash, if you get perf. sports seats is the leather as soft/quality as on the perf comfort seats?

By the way, I have the full double headrest as pictured in the above pic.

My head is beginning to hurt!

The leather should be the same, the difference would be in the cushions under the leather. Sport/regular seats are more firm (from my experience). Comfort seats are more like pillows, especially the bottom piece where we sit, they're very plush in comparison.

My personal preference, is comfort seats hands down .. the reality is if I'm going to go to a track or drive this car like a die hard sports car, then I will make the changes necessary in the settings to give me a "stronger" hold... but 99.9% of my driving is not on the track, and so what matters to me is comfort... as long as I can smash the gas peddle, rail into a turn, and not be thrown around, I'm happy!

I am confused as I have a 9/07 build vented comfort seats with the headrest that can you can bring the sides inward and contour around your head.

I believe mine is an 100/07 build. Do your secondary headrests (where your head touches) cover the whole of the section behind or just the bottom half? Mine cover the full thing as in the picture.

F- that's the beauty of the active bolstering. Hadn't used it until few months ago and now it's always on

BMW Taste Police

Is this situation not the dumbest thing you have ever heard? Add to it that the rest of the world gets tons of choices and US-folk are permitted a very small subset . The reasons have been discussed elsewhere but it doesn't make it any easier for me to accept. Non-US beast photos get posted and the frustration revisits. Some of the interiors are way cool.

Selecting seats for my beast (on order) was the single most difficult choice I had to make. Multi, sport, vent, perf... what a headache. I sure hope I receive what I thought I ordered.

Here, this should clear things up:

April 08+ Comfort Seat Headrest, no M Logo:

Notice the entire headrest is split, that whole headrest is adjustable.

Pre-April 08 Comfort Seat Headrest, no M logo:

Notice that half of the headrest is "cushioned" that's the piece that moves Pre-April 08.

20-way Multi-function seat headrest, M logo:

Piece is still adjustable, just notice the leather is tighter, it's more of a firm headrest, as opposed to the comfort which is more pillow-like.

Standard 16-way seats, M logo:

---

That should clear it up

Thanks, Flash and let's add:

20-Way Multi-Function seats (with side bolsters) w/ perforated Merino Leather (full leather on some exterior colors)

I love these seats, haven't seen them in person (My buddy has black comfort perforated seats in his '07 M5, not too sporty, obviously nice, but similar to my 550i in style)
