Concerned when warranty is up, 06 owners?
Hi all - I was originally sticking it out for an E90 M3 however with a new baby and budget of $50k max I'm starting to consider an 06 M5. As I've owned many bimmers over the years (including a couple M3's) I know first hand why they have the reputation of "bmwtroubleyou" and with the high cost of an M car I usually sell when the warranty is up.
So... If I'm looking at an 06, I should have about 2 years of warranty\service remaining.
I've done some research on these beasts and the issues are all over the place - some major issues some none at all.
2 questions for 06 owners:
1. If you have an 06: will you keep your car when the warranty is up? Or will the high maintainence cost scare you into selling your car?
2. Will resale values take a "dive" when the warranty is up?

I would never own this car out of warranty. Get an extended warranty. Not that the M5 is a bad car, but when one thing does break, it costs booku dolores.

06 owner here.
1. I believe most owners on forum will not keep the car when the warranty is up. My lease will end next year. Just like you, I was planning to jumpship to the new M3 but concluded it's just not for me; therefore I plan to buy the car out and purchase extended warranty until the new M5 comes alone. I got a quote from local dealer here for $4,800 2yr/50K (BMW) or $4,200 5yr/50k (GE). I haven't done any bargaining or shopping around yet since I still have 2 years to go before warranty is up, but I am leaning toward the BMW warranty since I'm the original owner and hope I can get it between 3 to $4k when the time comes. Keep in mind tough that the extended are "limited" warranties so there may still be some out of pocket costs depend on what breaks, but the at least major stuffs will be covered.
2. As you probably noticed already, the resale already took a dive before the warranty is even up, so when warranty is up I doubt it will get any better especially BMW do not CPO M5/M6s. Anyway, my suggestion is to either sell the car in 2 years or purchase extended warranty from a good and reputable company.

Im dumping my 06 M5 in september to get an M6. It definitely scares the hell out of me to think what replacing the smg gearbox and other random parts would be out of warranty.

That's the whole reason I tossed my '06 550 for an '08 M5. I don't trust a German car past the warranty. On the other hand, if this were a Honda (like my trusty '92 Accord), I'll hold onto the car WAYYYYY past the warranty until it encounters its first problem.

+1 considering this same option. Or as the other member stated, purchase an extended warranty froma reputable company.

Nope. Will sell mine as warranty period ends. Bimmers are not cars you want to own out of warranty. My previous car was an X5 which I kept past warranty and guess what? At about 51000 miles, all sorts of lights went on and it was a $3500 repair. My SA contacted BMWNA and got them to cover most of it under warranty--not even Lexus does that. Anywho, after I got the car back, I took it to a BMW dealer and traded it in on my M5. Kind of a blessing in disguise.

If your max budget is $50k, then an 06' M5 is out of your budget unless it has very high miles. I would guess a $50k M5 would probably have close to 50,000 miles, which would essentially be out of factory warranty.
Good luck

I guess I am a little concerned when my warranty expires, but hopefully since my car is not my daily driver and has very low miles (6k), owning after the warranty won't be too bad. I bought the car in Nov '05 and plan on keeping it until the next generation M5 comes out in '10/'11(?).
