ESS Software Installed. (report)
Hello All,
As I promised I am writing my feedback regarding the ESS Software. First, I would like to Thank Mike for the Excellent Service he provided before, during and after the sale. Hope your feeling better now Mike after all the things you went through in the past weeks. In addition to Mike, ESS Norway Staff provided excellent support as well.
Second, The Software feedback. As soon as i started the car and rolled out of the garage I immediately noticed the shift smoothness!! I really never expected the SMG shifting to be much better than stock. (I Wonder why wouldn't BMW update our softwares to match the ESS SMG smoothness.) It is very noticeable! You can feel the difference in Auto and Manual gear modes.
So far I have put 200 Kilo's on the car, and its pulling really hard and I can feel it pull harder and harder. (There is a video comparison coming on the way between a stock M5 and Mine, to prove the difference)
In addition, My RPM has been raised to 8400 (I also had the option to raise it to 8500) which makes the SMG shift at high RPM's very aggressively and that aggressive shift makes you feel really good (at least me) it really brings the smile to your face.
I was also given the option to program the ECU so it wouldnt through any faults if i installed my headers at any point in time. I went with that as well, even though i have no plans to installing headers for the time being.
Overall, I would recommend ESS to anyone interested in not only power, but improving your car characteristics to the better. I waited alot for the perfect company to come up with a good software, and it was all worth it. ESS did a great job researching and all their hard work has come out with good results.
I salute ESS for the Excellent upgrade, and I would recommend them without hesitation. I hope that i havnt missed something, but will update this thread as i put more millage into my car.
GOOD Job Mike @ ESS.
Regards &
Happy ESSing!
- By the way just remembered that I was part of the long ESS group buy list. Even though it was alot of us, Mike managed to keep us all up to date in public and private with our orders. He even arranged everything with ESS Norway, while he was going through the bad days we all know about. Again Good job man. I am a vey hapy customer, and will be one of your returning customers.
I think you guys should take a look at how Mike@ESS kept us all up to date in his group buy thread here ( **ESS E60 M5 / M6 Custom Tuned Performance Software GROUP BUY** ). I hope that other vendors learn from that thread on how customers should be handled. Again Excellent Job Mike!

Regarding the smooth shifts. My 2008 is very smooth. I am under the impression that BMW DID update the SMG shift program.

Thanks for the update!
I'll definitely be doing a fairly extensive test on the software. I'm
looking to do a dyno on a dynojet, dynodynamics, and a v-box run.
Unfortunately this won't happen until May. Just no time to do all
this right now.

Hey folks,
If you dont mind, I would also like to add a couple of comments as well. I thought it would just be wise to add more positive comments on this thread then to start another one. Sorry to bombard your Thread r tuned.
Well, I got my ess software done as well, but this was about 2 weeks ago, before the group buy. So far I have put about 500 miles on it or so, mainly thanks to the past weekends canyon run on angeles crest highway with a couple of my buddies that have bikes.
Thanks to Dale and Simon, I got my evosport headers done about 3 weeks ago. There was window gap of about 4-5 days that I had my headers done without any type of software. The set up that I had was, Meistershaft GT mufflers with xpipe, evosport pullies, evosport headers, and K&N CAI. The intial set up is LOUD, however, i can feel the power there. I know most would say to wait a few hunderd miles till the ECU adapts to the headers, but i only waited about 100 miles or so. The power was obviously there, but then again, i really couldnt feel it much do to the fact that the exhaust note was WAY TOO LOUD. (It was so loud, my rear deck sub fell down due to the heavy vibration! ) Yes I know, I did not dyno, and I should kick myself in the arse for not doing so, but I AM SORRY, haha.
Now shortly after 1 week or so without software, i decided to call up mike and order the ESS. I also placed a call to our friendly guys at Evosport to order there Race mufflers and there x-pipe with highflow resonators. After a few hundred miles or about 500 miles or so, the car has turned a complete 180. Keep in mind that I did drive the car for a 100 miles or so with my old setup and it was quick and the power was there, however, it did feel that i was missing something and the fact that the system was insanely LOUD. Now with my new set up, everything is a completely different feeling!! First and foremost the evosport catback system sounds 50X better and the quality and built is reallly nice. More so over, its a very VERY Light system. With about 500 miles or so with the ESS software, the car runs SO much smoother. The throttle response has improved greatly, and i can really tell the difference with or without software. The software really compliments the header/pully/exhaust combo, and its just responds so greatly. Ive opted for the 8400 redline and it sure does get there quickly when i was doing canyon runs this past weekend. All in all, its a great set up. What really drew me towards ESS is the fact that they new also how to tweak the torque management which is a plus for me! I have already set a dyno date on the 11th of april at SP. I plan to get another few more hunderd miles on the software before the dyno day. I will post up these results along with sound clips on the boards. Hope this helps!

Exactly. I've always been bragging about lagging from throttle response with my header/pulley/exhaust(worst with straight pipe) set, and now I'm in love every second driving her.
