I've already tried that quickly with a lens cloth I had in the car but the cloth was a little too thick, there really is very little room to insert a protective layer.
I bought a clear stick on protective cover for the iPhone but never used it since the glass has remained mark free but I might try cutting a thin strip from that and applying it to the top edge of the phone. Hardly ideal but should do the trick for now. I did think about applying this to the plastic holding strip causing the damage but as it would still be moving over the chrome, any grit/dirt on the strip is still going to scratch.
I'm not sure what BMW's stance is going to be on this one, should I expect them to repair/replace the iPhone? I know it's only minor cosmetic damage that I don't really care about in the long run but it's just the fact my otherwise "OK condition" iPhone is now blemished from an accessory specifically designed for it. I have heard back from another M5 owner with the cradle that they are not experiencing the same problem.
The scratches only appear slight and superficial, they may polish out but I'm not trying anything like that until BMW parts dept have acknowledged my problem.
If anybody else has the cradle I'd be interested to hear if you've got similar marks on the top edge.

It seems the little lip of plastic that holds the top edge in place seriously scratches the chrome bezel on the top edge. I've only been using mine for a few days and I am not a happy chappy! BMW parts were closed by the time I got there today but I'll be having words with them on Monday.
I'm trying to get a decent photo of the scratches to demonstrate this and will post asap.
Photo below is the best I could take to show scratches, if you want to download the full size (2MB) image click the thumbnail at the bottom.

I have no such problems. In fact your cradle looks different than mine...my plastic looks OEM and is perfectly smooth while yours has a "roughness" to it from your pictures.
I know that BMW NA gets some parts from different sources, I wonder if this is one of those items.

That looks sick man, I'm stoked they came out with it, now I just have to get my iPhone to not be a brick.

I'd be interested to see a photo of your iPhone adapter and the "smooth" plastic finish. My previous Nokia snap-in has exactly the same "rough" texture to the plastic as the iPhone snap-in. The plastic lip causing the scratching is made of smooth plastic though.

I have never hacked/jailbroken my iPhone but all the people I know who bricked their iPhones when v1.1.2 came out have managed to bring them back from the dead with v1.1.3, do some googling but I'm sure it involved starting the bricked phone in recovery mode and them connecting to iTunes to put v1.1.3 on it. [but this forum isn't the place to discuss such things]

Not sure I'm feeling this one. My Iphone stays on my belt clip and connects via Bluetooth. If I need to access the phone I'd rather not have to lift the console to get to it. I suppose if you are in your car all the time and need it charged this would be a plus.

I have a question regarding these phone cradles...
If the phone is left in the car, and the car is then switched off, does it turn off the phone?
If you leave the phone in the car and then turn on the car, does it turn on the phone?
My issue is that with my Treo 680 all I can see is the speed dial list of contacts, I was thinking of leaving a second phone in the car (something that shows the whole list of contacts) as I have 2 sim cards with the same number... So before I get into the car, I would turn off my Treo and then the "Car" phone would turn on when I start the car and connect with that phone, and vice versa
Thanks,
petrolhead

No, the phones remain in the state they were in prior to engine start/stop.
This is certainly the case with the Nokia cradle and iPhone cradle and more than likely the whole BMW snap-in range.
Does the switching between primary (Treo) and secondary (car) SIMs not happen just on the power on/off of the Treo?
An alternative would be to have a secondary phone in the car, permanently powered on, with a Pay As You Go (i.e. no contract) SIM in it. Then setup your primary phone (Treo) to redirect all incoming calls to the phone number of the SIM in the car. This works well providing you remember to turn the Treo off before driving however, if you make calls from the car phone it will not be shown as you primary mobile number and you will not be using your tariff minutes. I have this setup for both my parents since they never make calls whilst driving but may occasionally receive calls.

Thanks for the info...
The 2 sim I have is for the same number/account, so which ever phone is on gets the call. I had the same issue with my 330i, I had a built in phone the car, so I had to turn off my primary phone, turn on the car (to turn on the phone) and make a call so the calls will now come on the car phone (so the base-station would register the phone onto the network) and make/receive calls from the car, and vice versa.
It looks like I would have to do the same thing in the M5, or use another number for a secondary phone, and do call forwarding... Or use another phone, I just replaced the iPhone with the Treo, so I don't want to go back to it (even though BMW says the iPhone has full compatibility with the bluetooth system)
Side note: you don't have to turn off your primary phone if you are doing call forwarding, no calls will come on the phone anyways, they would be directed straight from the operator to the second number

I just got the IPOD intergration installed im my 2006 E60 M5 and it works like a charm Plug and Play. It was installed through my glove box since 2006 is not wired for the center councel. My CD changer had to be taken out as well and im left with the single disc now. I have never used the changer before so it was not a loss to me at all. My software was updated and my Iphone fully intergrated into the Idrive with all my phone information and IPOD playlists and songs I can choose from.
Parts were $300 and Labor was $300 so total was $600 and im very happy now I can plug in Charge, Talk, and Play through one button now...
I had it installed at Crevier for you So-Cal people who might wonder...
