Alright guys Im new here and I have a question....as I am driving in m mode with the car set in p500 sport and everything set to max, as I shift with the paddle shifters it sounds like the transmission is banging into gear,(like there is a thud that comes from the trunk when I upshift.....) could this be due to the way Im shifting or is this normal....and if so is there any trick to working the shift

Let me say I am beginner when it comes to high performance cars as I am only 18 so take it easy on me.

Mine buddy....I just traded in my 335i and payed the difference.... I have 1101 miles on it and I am still learning how to perfect my shifts in M mode with the stiffness on 5..!

Canysmc can that be done on an 08 M5...

This . . .
I have 1101 miles on it and I am still learning how to perfect my shifts in M mode with the stiffness on 5..!
and . . .

Quote; "They already gave me the 1000-1200 mile service(with the break in oil)...and by s-6 you mean the shifting stiffness..!"

and . . .

Quote; "Keang24, I love the 5 series and I want to mod the M5 but I thought it would be a good decision to put at least 5000 miles on it before that happens"

lends some to question the sincerity of the post. You care enough about the car to wait until 5,000 miles to mod, yet you "max" out the settings to run the car hard at only 1,100 miles (although, you already had the 1,200 miles service?). As you know, there is a further break-in recommendation between 1,200 and 3,000 miles.

Maybe, its "new to the forum jitters" and they way the information is conveyed is a bit out of context. I will go with that!

Good luck with your car. Treat her nice! :15:
 (but you not 21 yet, so we'll do a rain check!)

When the settings are full blast (S6/DSC off/P500S ect..) gear changes can be pretty violent at higher rpms. Try the throttle lift technique, lift a little after you select a gear.

I personally don't mind the violence when my foot is planted, its my passengers that do.

FloridaBmw, yeah that is the problem when im going pedal to the metal pushing 140 and upshifting there tends to be thud noise with the gear change...I guess that is normal.... What part of florida are you in....

Plus still that recalibration of the clutch sounds good but I still dont know if you can do it with an 2008

Goodstuff buddy...Im up here in Ocala/Gainseville area....do you know of any events here in Florida that you take the M5 to...

They already gave me the 1000-1200 mile service(with the break in oil)...and by s-6 you mean the shifting stiffness..!

M5roth that could be a good assumption but the fact that I never drove a manual car before may be true, but Ive been driving for a lot longer than two years buddy.

FloridaBmw it makes sense....thanks for the help and Ill try the recalibration either tonight or tommorow and see how it goes...thanks again.

I didnt know that there was a limit on what can be asked....and I thought this was a M5 forum that was for car enthusiasts.

Keang24, I love the 5 series and I want to mod the M5 but I thought it would be a good decision to put at least 5000 miles on it before that happens

You have an 08' M5 and an 08' 5 series? And youre 18? I don't really know anyone, age aside, that would own these two cars simultaneously. I'm not saying I care what you own, but its just disturbing to know, if you're for real, that an 18 year old who is asking these questions about a 500hp car is driving the same streets I am. I don't have anything against young guys driving nice cars, but an 18 year old behind the wheel of an M5 is what accidents are made of IMO. Then again you could be making all of this up.

i think that because your so young it is hard to believe for some that you are for "real" and not just trolling. if have pics of your m5 that would be nice. i for one think that it is possible to be 18 and own a m5 but i would think that such a young guy with that kind of money would tend to purchase something like a porsche or other sports car. (unless of course you started having kids at 16 and having to carry around kids in the back! lol). when i was younger i had a lot of friends that had rich parents from overseas and a few of them had ferraris and lambos purchased cash for them before could even legally buy cigarettes or alchohal. good luck to you.

What does everything to max mean? Are you turning DSC off so you can be in S6 mode or are you using S5 with DSC set in MDM?

S5, P500S, MDM, EDC Sport, Active Seats Full, HUD M-Mode or
S6, P500S, DSC Off, EDC Sport, Active Seats Full, HUD M-Mode.

Thanks guys for understanding...and I will put up pics asap...!

Snowball, I am talking about in the settings menu setting everything in M-mode to the max so it is when S5, P500s, MDM, edc sport,HUD M-mode

#25 · (Edited)
I don't consider that the max mode. I consider S6, P500s, DSC off, edc sport, HUD M-mode the max mode. You also can not do launch control with DSC on.

Anyway, in MDM the kick in the rear end is awesome and it should feel like a bang in the rear end, cause DSC is still minimally trying to keep the wheels from spining. Try the S6 mode with the DSC off and you'll feel a better punch and a better feel. But be careful DSC off and there is no skid protection. :7:

M5froth I completley understand where you are coming from assuming that I am irresponsible..that is definetly understandable. I do sometimes make bad decisions but I am young and I do drive safe and I will not endanger the lives of others..and I hope you are not under the impression that I am the one to brag, I have never been that way and never will. Plus I will have pictures up asap with me in the pictures. I have no reason to lie buddy.

Snowball, thanks again buddy and I will try that soon.

M5baller, I will admit I was not aware that it wasnt a good idea to have m-mode set the way I did...My dealer did not tell me anything about it, when I took the test drive my salesmen had it set on the highest levels and told me it was fine. Even the mechanic said it was fine and that the only thing I really had to worry about was getting the services done on time. I know the salesmen pretty well as a friend and he has no reason to lie to me...plus like I said above the mechanic said there is no problem with it at all.... But I do understand where you guys are coming from, but I just want to be apart of the community and learn stuff just like you guys..

so take care

Josh

I still don't understand why you choose to keep regular 5 and M5, but that's not a big deal, just curious.

Regarding s5 versus s6 shifting speed, it's exponential growth in feeling (totally animal). So the most brutal speed would be S6, DSC OFF, P500S and it can only be set in I-drive (S6 only allow with DSC OFF, period).

With all do respect, gradually learn your car before you turn off DSC. With a little mistake combination of your mind and your right foot, you can be history.

Be safe and enjoy

P.S. People on this board care about each other especially when someone own 500hp car at age of 18. Don't take it personal. We all watch each other back. Nobody want to see any incidents like sunset blvd incident or arizona incident involved MB E63

i understand, and at the same time do not understand, why it is so hard to believe an 18 y/o can afford an m5. yes, hardly any 18 y/o makes that kind of money (or any money for that matter), but in this growing world where the internet and technology are paving the way for practically everything, i seriously believe that younger aged people have better ideas and thoughts on how to make money than older aged people. i am 18 y/o almost 19, go to school full time, had an excellent idea for a company a little less than a year ago, and am now making enough where i could afford to buy myself an e39 m5. i only wish the thought of young people making money (or age discrimination for that matter) was wiped clean from everybody's minds. it would be so much easier to give presentations and make deals when working with people a lot older than myself.:) a lot of times people will think im joking or not serious just because of my age and because of this i wish i was older and out of school so i could do more and go farther. so whoever makes a big deal about an 18 y/o should not, some of us are mature and don't party/drink/smoke/be stupid/be found passed out around college campuses every nightcherrsagai(although it does sound quite fun lol). but anyways that comment about owning a porsche over an m5=not cool:M5launch:

One "Baller" to another (there is gonna be love here :15:) You can not discount wisdom! If you follow this board, there was another young man from Santa Barbara with a new E60 M5 and he had a plethora of mishaps that included a uncontrolled burn-out doughnut in from of a police officer and he posted it!?

Although, you articulate a mature defense in favor of respect of 18 year olds in general, life does not work that way. You will/are the exception of the rule. There is a reason even though 18 year olds can vote and enlist in the armed forces, they can not Drink. The vast majority of generations of 18 year olds before you showed they are not mature enough to handle the responsibility. You may not be aware of this, however, in many states, there was a drinking age of 18. Over time, this was not working out! In fact there is a push in many states to change the minimum age to acquire a drivers license from 16 to 18.

I would argue, statistically, with present company excepted, that the maturity of an 18 year old in 2008 is not anywhere near that of 1958. I have a 24 and 21 year old and they can not hold a candle to the life experiences I have. Are they bright, hell yes. Much smarter than I am and I have owned and operated my own company for 20 years. But again, put in a room of veterans and they would stand out like a sore thumb.

Sorry Baller, your still a rookie and we know how rookies are treated. The only way to graduate, is to pay your dues! My advise, enjoy your youth, once it is over, its over for a long time!

Good post!
 (oh yeah, you too in a couple of years!)
