N.A. Fuel Requirements

I have heard of many people having performance problems when they tweak their software (i.e. Dinan Performance Engine Software) and then use cheapo gasoline (hard to believe huh?, it was for me too, why anyone would use cheap gas in such a car)...FYI... from the Owners Manual and then list of Top Tier Detergent Gasoline Retailers:

From the N.A. Owners Manual

Required fuel
Super Premium Gasoline/AKI 93
Always use this premium grade fuel to obtain
maximum fuel economy and performance.
The minimum approved fuel grade is AKI 91.
Do not use gasoline below the specified
minimum quality, as otherwise engine
damage can result.<
Use high-quality brands
Field experience has indicated significant differences
in fuel quality: volatility, composition,
additives, etc., among gasolines offered for sale
in the United States and Canada. Fuels containing
up to and including 10% ethanol or other
oxygenates with up to 2.8% oxygen by weight,
that is, 15% MTBE or 3% methanol plus an
equivalent amount of co-solvent, will not void
the applicable warranties with respect to
defects in materials or workmanship.
The use of poor-quality fuels may result in
drivability, starting and stalling problems
especially under certain environmental conditions
such as high ambient temperature and
high altitude.
Should you encounter drivability problems
which you suspect could be related to the fuel
you are using, we recommend that you respond
by switching to a recognized high-quality brand
such as gasoline that is advertised as Top Tier
Detergent Gasoline.
Failure to comply with these recommendations
may also result in unscheduled maintenance.<

TOP TIER Detergent Gasoline Retailers

Gasoline retailers must meet the high TOP TIER standards with all grades of gasoline to be approved by the automakers as providing TOP TIER Detergent Gasoline.

In addition, all gasoline outlets carrying the brand of the approved retailer must meet the TOP TIER standards.

Additional gasoline retailers are added to the TOP TIER list as they meet the standards. The retailers known to be on the TOP TIER list are shown below.

TOP TIER Gasoline Retailers:

QuikTrip
Chevron
Conoco
Phillips
76
Shell
Entec Stations
MFA Oil Company
Kwik Trip/Kwik Star
The Somerset Refinery, Inc.
Chevron-Canada
Aloha Petroleum
Tri-Par Oil Company
Shell-Canada
Texaco
Petro-Canada
Sunoco-Canada

Lets look at it this way. You produce less hp when using less octane. Fact is you need to use more fuel to maintain lets say 65mph. So if you are trying to save money by using 87 octane instead of 91, thinking that there is no difference, the difference is that you are getting less MPG. So if you are getting less MPG by using the cheap gas and trying to say $0.10 a gallon, but it costs you $0.12, you are not saving any money.

True the car will compensate and not create knock, but it will retard spark and change fuel devliery to do so.

There is a point where higher octane does not have a benefit, but with a high hp, high compression engine like the S62, it does make a difference from 87-91.

Just my $0.02

In CA 91 octane is the highest rated fuel sold at stations. True,
there are places you can buy racing fuel and mix to ~93 but
that's pretty annoying. The ECU can adapt a bit but I'm pretty
sure you'll need a tune to advance the timing to take full advantage
of higher rated fuel.

But who is putting in anything less than 91? I'm not sure why
anyone who buys an M5/M6 would do this.

I love it....so many people worry about good mileage and how much they are spending for a gallon of gas, first off it's an M5, NOT a Prius....The car is 100,000.00 dollars NOT 20 grand...and the difference between Mid grade and High octane is what 3.00 bucks a tank....
.
. So what's the problem ??? in Europe gas is what ? 5.00 or 6.00 bucks a gallon ??? We are lucky.. and as the old addage goes: If you can't take the heat......get out of the kitchen.....
.
Thanks Snowball, good thread and so true....

Ethanol decreases your emissions while also decreasing your mpg and decreasing your hp. It also polutes ground water.
