Question - raspy exhaust/header sound @ 4k-5k rpm?

Ok, I've been meaning to ask this for about a year now and also mean to take a ride in another's M5, but haven't gotten around to it.

I've got a very stock '06 M5 that when warmed up and spinning somewhere between 4000 and 5000 rpm I get a very distinct raspy sound from the engine. It honestly sounds like an odd resonance in the headers, but could also just be a heat shield vibrating. It comes and goes as I go in/out of that rpm range. It isn't too annoying and even gives a bit more aggressive sound, but want others' takes on it. It's been like this since day one driving it out of the factory. It doesn't have to be a hard acceleration to make it occur. Anyone else?

Thanks.
-Tim

Shouldn't happen. Definitely take your SA for a test drive, and get it fixed.

I also noticed this sound a few days ago for the first time ever. It sounded like it was coming from behind the air vent inside the engine compartment somewhere. I wonder if it has anything to do with weather?? it was around the low 50's the other night here in miami and my vehicle has never experienced this temperature maybe it has something to do with that?? I do know i usually let the car warm up for 2-3 minutes before i drive it but i was in a rush that night and only let it warm up for about 45 seconds. I have driven it two nights since then and have let it warm up properly and have not noticed the sound, It has also been in the 70's for the last couple nights as well.

Not yet, but need to eventually get a ride from another local.

Not real keen on taking it to the SA for a test drive because they'll say definitely leave it here for evaluation and test drive, which as we all know, leaving an M5 for required test driving can be a bad thing (for the car/owner).

I'd rather troubleshoot prior to taking it in just to make sure there is a problem, if this sound is in fact unique.

Is that similar to what u described? If so, that might be normal.

Well it could also be the heat shield that protects the headers, it might have worked it slef loose from vibrations.
