2007 is a great year for Alpina! Also more power than any BMW :checkeredflag:

ALPINA present, as one of three world premières at the IAA in Frankfurt, the new BMW ALPINA B5 S – with updated 4.4l V8 engine.

With a V8 engine and a displacement of 4.4 litres, the B5 S drivetrain is comparable to the well-known BMW ALPINA B7. The charging system in this engine
differs from conventional solutions: not a turbo but also not a super-charger, which typically needs a great deal of power to operate, especially at high revs.
The ALPINA V8 receives boost from a so-called ”radial compressor”, which one may visualise as a combination of a turbo and a compressor.

Over the course of the past year, ALPINA engineers have been thoroughly analysing the engine for additional potential, both on the test stand and on the road.
Through further development of the camshaft overlap algorithms, the combustion process could be optimised, markedly lowering exhaust gas temperatures.
This temperature delta is the basis for being able to increase power from 500 to 530 horsepower, while simultaneously raising torque from 700 to 725 Nm.

A quick look at the power and torque curves suggest what one can expect from the complex technology that fills the BMW ALPINA B5 S engine bay. At a
humble 2,500 rpm the engine already delivers 200 hp. At 5,500 rpm a peak of 530 horsepower (390 kW) is achieved. This provides a very broad power curve
across which the B5 S offers superior performance. As evidenced by the data, the engine’s character is akin to that of a much bigger normally-aspirated engine.
The B5 S drivetrain distinguishes itself through its responsiveness as well as its ability to rev effortlessly up to the redline.

At the same time, ALPINA worked closely with ZF to develop the new ALPINA Sport SWITCH-TRONIC. The shift durations of the excellent ZF 6HP26
automatic transmissions were able to be reduced by 50 percent. In manual mode the shifts feel comparable in their dynamism to a double clutch gearbox.
The reaction time is 1/10 of a second. Especially sporty drivers will benefit from the blip of the throttle on down-shifts in this mode. The SWITCH-TRONIC
allows the entire rev range to be accessed on down-shift, without upsetting the automobile’s balance.

One doesn’t need a racing licence to call up the enormous performance on tap, just step on the accelerator!

The result of continued development is evidenced by the data: the already stunning 0-100 km/h run improves by 1/10 of a second to 4.6 seconds (Touring: 4.7 s).
Top speed increases by three km/h to 317 km/h (197 mph) for the B5 S Saloon and to 313 km/h (194 mph) for the Touring - placing both in the company of
some of the most well-known sports cars in the world.

Developed in co-operation with SACHS Race Engineering, the electronically-controlled adjustable damping, called EDC, is employed on the B5 S. By means
of varying compression and re-bound damper settings, the sporty character is augmented without a loss in comfort. The dampers are quite supple in the base
setting, but as soon as greater forces act on the suspension – such as undulating road surfaces at speed on the Autobahn – the dampers automatically increase
their resistance in a fraction of a second to help ensure safe driving. The more sport-oriented driver can also manually select firmer damper settings in advance,
using the EDC button located on the centre console.

The outcome of continuing suspension development with the large 20” wheels are truly balanced driving characteristics. The B5 S provides light-footed,
extremely neutral handling, responding even more quickly and precisely to driver inputs. Reduced body-roll during high-speed cornering can be further
credited to the adoption of stiffer stabilisers. A rear roof spoiler lip increases high speed stability of the B5 S Touring.

The B5 S’s large 20” wheels1 with MICHELIN 245/35 ZR20 front and 285/30 ZR20 rear tyres, also create a graceful appearance. As an alternative, we will
continue to offer the 19” wheel and tyre combination, with 245/40 ZR19 tyres front and 275/35 ZR19 rear, for more comfort-oriented customers.

The B5 S’s stopping ability is impressively documented by the test results: from 200 km/h to a standstill in less than 5.5 seconds. Derived from the B7, special
emphasis was placed on the brake system’s comfort-oriented characteristics. For this very reason, the discs, at 374mm/36mm front and 370mm/24mm rear,
are not cross-drilled. In spite of this, wet-braking ability was noticeably improved by virtue of so-called ”dry-braking functionality”. When the windshield
wiper is engaged, the brake pads lightly contact the brake discs from time to time, removing any film of water that might have built up. This action goes
completely unnoticed by the driver. In combination with two-piston TEVES floating callipers, extremely high deceleration values and fade-free, linear braking
are guaranteed.

For packaging reasons (less space in rear wheel wells) the B5 S Touring will continue to be sold with 19” wheels only, but is now equipped with a rear roof
spoiler lip for increased stability at high speeds.

The B5 S’s interior invites you in accustomed fashion with its warm and comfortable materials as well as bold, uncluttered lines and forms. A good example
– the asymmetrical treatment of the front two doors, where the electric window and wing-mirror controls fall intuitively to the driver’s hand. A new drive-bywire
shift lever replaces the mechanical connection to the automatic transmission and presents itself in an ergonomic joystick design.
The BMW ALPINA B5 S’s comprehensive standard equipment doesn’t leave much room for additional-cost options. ALPINA’s traditional fine wood
communicates a warm ambience, as does the hand-crafted leather interior with its typical ALPINA design.
BMW ALPINA automobiles have always been known for their good fuel economy coupled with excellent performance. The B5 S Saloon is best-in-class in
performance and CO2 emissions, with a combined fuel economy of 12.3 l/100km (23.0 mpg) and CO2 emissions of 294 g/km. The B5 S Touring yields 12.4
l/100km (22.8 mpg) and CO2 emissions of 296 g/km.

Probably not. Alpina is maxed out with the Alpina B7 deliveris. Talking about maxed out, check this out, the Alpina B6S

I would think the Alpina B6S cabrio with 530 HP is a no brainer for USA market, but it is the Alpinas capability that is the problem.
