turn signal lever

I have had my 06 M5 for about 4 months and I have been having a problem with the turn signal lever. If I signal to change lanes and I push the lever too far so it remains on until I push it back, unless I am very very carefull in returning the arm to the off position, it shoots past and starts signaling the opposite direction. If you quickly try to correct that I end up switching it back the other way. This keep the cars behind me quessing what the hell I am actually going to do. Has anyone else experiences this problem?

No, don't have that problem.

In fact as far as I can remember the lever does not stay in possition when you put it on permanently, it always goes back to centre.

I also think that if is still flashing you can just move it in the same direction (for a short blink) to cancel it.

Never had any problems with my indicators, so I may be wrong with the above as I really don't think about it.

I think this is normal. One of the first things I noted when I got my car
was the turn signal was more subtle in regards to a lane change indicator
than other cars I was use to. In fact on the Topgear video Clarkson
mentions this in his overly dramatic way.

Over time you'll get use to it.

Actually to cancel the turn signal press gently in the SAME direction NOT the opposite... it takes a littke getting used to.

a gentle press gives you like three flashes then stops for a lane change

if you press it harder it will stay on until you complete a turn then cancel itself (or you can press gently in the same direction to cancel it yourself).

Thanks for the input. I did not know that if I pushed the turn signal lever in the same direction that it was flashing, it would cancell the flash. I was reversing the stroke and if I went too far it would signal a turn for the other direction.

The turn signal operation is a bit counterintuitive, but it is all set out cleary in the manual.

You'll get used to it and it's quite nice once learned.

What I don't like are the sharp edged buttons on the end of the stalk that as I flick the lever quickly for a left or right turn and fingers run off the end of the lever I almost scratch my fingertips. Perhaps I have wussy fingertips?

I used to have the same problem initially. My rule of thumb is "tab" the turn signal when changing lane coz it will automatically turn off itself. Then used full click when turning left or right. If u push too hard when intend to tab, then just tab again to deactivate the signal.
