I don't know. But I can't see too much. I'm guessing you had the lead on him in the beginning?
Those crazy V-12s crank out over 600 horses at 738 ft lb torque. He should've been walking you!

Beaten by a Mercedes
I got my butt kicked the other night by either a SL55 or a SL65 (I never got a good look). It was from a standing start, he came from behind me and I didn't know he was launching. He had me by a car length before I got on it but I never really closed. First time my M5 has been beaten by ANYTHING!

do i need to point out that those c/d results seem to be QUITE flawed?
i won't even make a point about those acceleration figures but according to c/d, the huge 5000lb+ s65 stops better and has better skid pad figures than an m5...give me a break!!! about the only thing they got right was the governed top speed.

I took a double take at the numbers too. I'm guessing the increased power and $100K price variance has something to do with the Merc being as fast as the M5.
The weight difference is 5081 vs 4110 or 971 lbs.
An on-line version of the S65 article can be found at http://www.caranddriver.com/shortroa...mg.html?al=159 . The M5 numbers are on page 48 of the 01/06 issue.

the merc's acceleration isn't "as fast as the m5", it's easily quicker according to real world reports. regardless, i highly doubt it roadhandling or braking is better as c/d is reporting.

I think it's a waste of time to debate which car is faster, as it's an apples-and-oranges comparison.
The S65 is a large luxury sedan, selling at a price point almost double of the M5. It's been given a powerful engine, impressive suspension, and handles fairly well, considering it's weight. At it's selling price, comparing it to GT2s and other $200K exotics is a better comparison.
The figures I posted show the two cars almost identical in straight line acceleration. On roads with curves, the M5's lighter weight, shorter wheelbase and tighter suspension would walk all over the S65.
The AMG line is impressive, but they're beefed up luxury cars, that compete best at low speeds and in straight lines.
The M line was designed from ground up to provide ultimate all around performance. They handle better and provide a higher level of performance, at a lower price, than the competition.
I test drove both an E55 and CLS55 before purchasing my M5. For me, the choice was obvious.
