Dealer said he had no problems with new software

I had the V24 software in my 06 M5. I had a CD player problem and the deakker said I had to up grade to the latest version of software to correct the problem. I was concerned that it might cause problems with my K&N Typhoon system as well as affect the performance, because of the things I have read on this site. The dealer said that they installed V30. I hope this version addressed the problems I have heard about with the V27 release. He said that he had not obtained any error messages when starting the car. I will be picking it up the car tomorrow so I should be able to get a feel for any lose in performance.

This is the first time I've heard of a v30! Also, it's usually the first cold start of the day (or perhaps most totally cold starts in general) that is the problem one, so hopefully tomorrow morning there will be no issue.

I just picked up a '03 Lexus GS300 as a "junk miles" car (most of my mileage is for my real estate business one way or another) and as I was researching intakes for that, I found a couple manufurers that specifically addressed MAF sensor issues. In a nutshell, the stock MAF sensor may not be able to properly read the volume of air passing through, tripping up the sensor and causing the fault. Now we all probably figured it had something to do with this, and hopefully we'll get some larger MAF sensors sooner than later (Dinan is said to be developing them, but they might be custom sized for only their intakes rather than stock size).

I now get service engine light

I went to pick up my 06M5 from the dealer last night after he completed waranty work on the CD which in order to fix he forced me into up dating the software. He assured me that no problems would exist and that it would not affect the HP. After performing the work he called to say the car was ready and no faults existed. Upon my arrival and the departure of my ride. They ran the car up front for me, handed me the key and wished me well. When I started the car the service engine light came on. At this point they gave me a loaner car and ran the car back into the shop. I anticpate that their response will be that the problem is from the K&N Typhoon system and they can not be responcible. At which point they will say that since this is not waranty, they will want me to pay for the car rental. I will keep you posted.

I took my car in to the dealer to have my Dinan springs warranty exchanged and differential looked at. Of course the SES light was on with a reading of "Increased Emissions." This light came on the day after I installed the K&N, and has only gone off briefly for one day since. Approx. one month now since install. They ran the codes and it is reading MAF malfunction probably due to too much air passing by. SA says this is probably why my A/F ratios are off in higher RPM. I showed them the dyno chart and they could not give me a good explanation other than it must be the intakes throwing off the MAF sensors, dumping fuel and cutting back air intake. He says this is safety in the software because it is better to run too rich at high RPM than too lean leading to detonation. This is probably why the intakes are showing overall a power gain, but I am experiencing a power loss in the best part of the power band. Any feedback on this?

New software, now problem with Typhoon

The dealer just installed a software upgrade on my 06 M5. Prior to that I had the Typhoon's on for about a month with no problems. Now every other time I start the car I get a warning that the engine is running on reduced HP. If I drive for 500 ft and restart the car the warning goes away. I also noted that on one occation yesterday when driving home from work in P500S and S6 traction control off, coming off the line at a stop light in 1st gear it stumbled at about 6000 rpm almost as though the traction control shut the motor down. I have never had this happen before.

Chris,

One easy way to tell is to simply install the stock airbox pair. It would only take you 30 mins to reverse the install and would be worth knowing if it fixes anything.

Regards,

Darren

Darren,

Yes, my SA told me I may need to bring the boxes up for them to do that in order to fully assess the situation. They are trying to figure out if we can work around that, which I hope they can.

Typhoon UPdate

I talked with James at K&N today. He admitted that there was a problem if the car had software upgrades past V24. He recommended that I put the stock system back on until they solve the problem. I noted that only when the car sat for more than 3 to 4 hrs, upon starting the car the warning came on that the car was operating at 'reduced horse power'. If I sat there and ran the car for 1 minute and then shut the car off and restarted it the warning went away. I thought that since the Typhoon system drew its air from under the hood as opposed to the stock system that drew it air from outside the car, that enough fumes had built up under the hood during that time period and that was causing the intake air sensors to give the warning. Once the car had run for a minute, the air under the hood had been replaced by clean air, and the restart went well. To prove my theory, I left the hood open all last evening. This morning when I started the car I got the same warning. So much for that theory.

As a side note my blue tooth phone book doesnot work properly with the new software. I can delete entries, but any new entries I add to my phone do not show up in the cars phone book. For some reason it will not read them from my phone. I even went out and bought a new Verison RAZR V9m. BMW is at a loss to explain it.
