Doug, just to confirm he had code 69, not b9.

Also Apples, for 8C, engine noise too high, it might be worth checking the water pump shaft for excess play, as this may cause an issue for the knock sensors....just a thought though. Doug knows exactly what he is talking about.

Stuart,

It's probably time for either a new thermostat or the easy fix of a sending unit gone bad. GL.

You mean it could be giving bad readings that the computer doesn't make sense of and trips the 69?.
I've seen no spikes in temps, I never go past 210deg on a hot FL day..

Get into the secret menu and see if your running less that 74ºC when warm. If you are, then it's time for a new thermostat. Our beasts thermostats always go buns up in the open position.

I was asking about that "secret" menu this morning and I printed out the instructions and had no luck at all.
I've got the 4:3 screen and step3 says push "right button"...sorry dont have one...
I tried that on the left and only button and nothing.

They mean the buttons on your cluster. If you don't have 2 then we need to start questioning whether you really have an M5

I kept pulling the same fault on my M5, and replaced the thermostat, temperature sender, and the double teperature switch (for the fans) and the fault went away. I did notice that the car was running cooler than should be expected per the temp gauge on the hot summer days here in FL, and after reading some threads discovered that LUCKILY these thermostats fail in the open position thus not overheating the car.
