Strange LED in rear courtesy lights?

Bit of a long-shot, but can anyone guess what the purpose might be of an LED which a car audio installer had inserted in the rear courtesy/reading light cluster on each side? The LED wire leads to where the CD changer, aftermarket DVD install etc. is in the boot, but wasn't actually connected to anything.

I can't think what it would be used for, particularly as some add-on to an audio system??

Hey, not bad.
I did think that the 'led' was unusual, as if you look at it closely the emmitter seemed to have a 'dished' element, as if it were focussing the beam. Don't know what the component mfr or part no is, but that might give me a starting point for trying an interface.

IR headphones - that's the boy, I think. There was one in each lamp cluster & the cable went back to the AV install, where - tada - there is a Philips wireless headphone setup or at least the control unit & it seems to work fine as a radio setup, so RTFM, once I find a FM!
Ta all
