Peake Code A2 - Is this the Exhaust or Intake CPS?

After researching this for an hour last night, I can't see that any post talks about how to tell which sensor is the one to replace when you get this code . I know it's on the left side, but have no idea if it's intake or exhaust. Folks in postings seem to talk about the two interchageably. The dealer just quoted me $300 for either part (I saw that Pacific has them for around $100 in a post), so I don't want to replace both.

Anyone have true insight on this?

Hmm. Which table are you looking at?
The Peake reader should first show you a number that references which table you are looking for and then the next number(s) are in that table.

Unfortunately I happen to know that my car throws codes from table #18 when it reads CPS errors.

Assuming you are talking about table #18, my Peake manual says code A2 is
"Crankshaft/Camshaft position correlation, Cyl #5-8"

In table #18 the codes for intake cam pos sensor are code 07 for the intake cyl 1-4 and code 08 for intake cyl 5-8.
The codes for exhaust CPS are 0A and 0B.

Can you be more specific about which table you're referencing?

Hi Ian - yes, my table is 18 too. I guess I'm off base. I thought "crankshaft/Camshaft Position Correlation was pointing to the CPS. Maybe not, since I'm not getting those other CPS codes that you pointed out. Are you familiar with this error?

The car runs great, but the SES light comes on in about 3 miles if I reset it.

Well I am getting a code 07 on mine, and usually a b8 (intake cam Vanos position control cyl 1-4) for good measure. One time I did not get the b8 so I'm assuming if I replace the intake CPS for cyl 1-4 the other code will go away.

In researching other threads on CPS, it looks like replacing the CPS may also help with the code A2 that you are seeing.
TECH: Replacing intake Camshaft Position Sensor...
post #18 mentions:
"Dropped my Beast of at the dealer.. and guess what. The Computer readout said: Signal, Camshaft sensor, exhaust, bank 1 and camshaft sensor, bank 1, synchronisation to crankshaft."

Then in post #19 he reports that after replacing the exhaust CPS on bank 1 that it worked and he doesn't mention the other code.

Now, I'm not an expert on this stuff, and I don't know what to tell you as to which CPS to replace. Anecdotally from that thread it seems the exhaust CPS is the one. But I don't know for sure. It would suck to replace one and have that not fix it. But you could replace both on that side to be safe. Maybe somone else can chime in with more info to save you the $$.

I think I've reached the end of my usefulness on this for you unless you are throwing a specific CPS code along with that A2 code.

Good sleuthing! The code reader he's using has slightly different readouts. I would really like to hear from someone that had the same readout as mine.

I had that as well as CPS specific errors. Makes sense, if the Camshaft data is hosed it will not correlate with the Crank. Fixing a CPS fixed the codes...

Thanks, Ard. Do you know if it was the exhaust CPS or the intake CPS that fixed it?

Do you want to hook your car up to my pc scan tool? I'm curious to finally put the thing to a test.

Okee-Dokee! Learning to Read the Peake Reader...

Mystery solved. It turns out I missread one of the codes that was trying to tell me "Exhaust CPS, 5-8." Turns out 0b on the reader is 0B in the table (not 06). Third time is the charm .

All set - I need the Exhaust CPS. If anyone knows the part number, let me know.

BTW, thank you to all you who offered advice, DIY guides and help! You are awesome.

Norcal
