Beware temporary replacement clusters

Not a big issue all round, but could be for anyone who has critical problems during cluster repair period.

I got a temporary (loan) cluster in the mail, sent my pixel-starved cluster to the expert who loaned me a cluster.

I will use the loaned unit for two days 'ish apparently.

During that time (it is not an M5 cluster) I will not know what the oil temperature is. More seriously maybe, I have no turn indicator symbols lit up, no SES, no warning lights at all in fact, no pixel display and I have a warning bleep when I start the car and when I shut it down.

I am told this is because the ECU doesn't recognise the unit but I am insufficiently knowledgeable to comment. I will just be glad when I get normal display functions. I feel a bit vulnerable until then.

The E39 dash consol needs to be coded to the DME. That is probally the cause of your issues.

You cannot just not drive the car for two days? I know this isn't an option for everyone, but it seems best.

Very sensible suggestion. This is what I decided.

The unbearable thing is that to go anywhere I need to use the Commander in Chief's car.

And to make matters worse, she accuses me of inventing a big 'put-down' because it is not a 106, it's a 206.

OK I got it wrong but big deal - 106/206/306 hmphhh ..............

i would be concerned that when you get your cluster back the you're get the warning dot that the mileage has been tampered with, sine the milage on the cluster will not match that stored elsewhere on the car. So it will look like someone has tampered with your odometer.

What exactly is this "mileage dot"? I assume if the cluster is replaced by a BMW dealer they make sure the dot is not there?

Never thought of that Mike, although the people doing the refurb of the cluster seem very skilled.

We shall have to wait and see.........

Never be gentle with a rental
Go mental in a rental
Even if it is the Mrs motor.

Just beware, when I was shopping the wife's Volvo V50 I almost went off road in it when it didn't go round corners like the M and if memory serves, there aren't that many straight roads in Yorkshire.

No issues with the repaired cluster. Everything works

Hi Mate

I have a set of Alpina clocks for my E38, and when I used them in my old E38 the only problem I had was with the traction control light. As the unit is not coded to the car it disables the traction control and the light stays on.

I know a guy local (Bradford) who can recode these and he is going to do mine as soon as I get time.

But he is very forthwrite and wants to know why you need it done etc. One thing he is very firm on is that he can recode the new unit to the car and will only exchange all of the existing data. He will not redo the mileage. I remember when I first spoke to him, it was like 100 questions, why are you changing it, proof that the unit you have is not stolen etc and most importantly I will NOT change the mileage under no circumstances!!!!

I thought he was a bit anal first but I understand his point of view. Once I met him I realised he is a genuine guy and said he was fed up with people that wanted him to "be creative with the mileage" on their cars and that he would not do that.

So I said I no worries. Only thing that he does not do is repair the pixcels. But he can code the units if needed.

Cheers
