Clear coat peeling off the wheels. Warranty? - The Unofficial BMW M5 Messageboard (m5board.com)

Hello,

I have an 03 with 36K miles on it. The original warranty expires on 07/09. The clear coat on the wheels is peeling off and there are small dark heat spots along the rim of the wheels. No scratches or road rash. Do you folks think I have a warranty claim with BMW for either wheel repair or replacement?

There are many threads here on wheel refinishing. Do a search.

That said, I doubt the black marks you see on your wheels is heat related. It is more likely damage from the etching that takes place when you (or a previous owner) used caustic liquids to clean the wheels. BMW dealers used to use them, too, but figured out it caused a problem if not cleaned off immediately.

You need a good SA. I did and mine were replaced under warranty - three years and ten months into the warranty!

I tried with my 330. They said that if it were only one wheel, then maybe. But since it was all 4, they say it is user error...ie using caustic chemicals to clean the wheels...which I had not. So, there's three options. Leave it be, have them repainted, get a nice set of aftermarket wheels! There's a bright side to everything!

As Silverstreak said, its possible, and a good SA certainly helps. I think its definitely worth a shot! I know many who have tried, some successful, others were turned away.

Awesome! Glad to see it worked out in your favor. Dealing with $tealers and warranty can sometimes get ugly.
