OBD "Communications Failure" during CA Smog Test

The techs at the ARCO Smog pros started looking at my fuse box during the smog inspection this morning, which seemed odd. Later, I found out why. They suspected a blown fuse because they got an error during a test. On the form, the "fail" was under a test called "malfunction indicator light." The verbal explanation by the tech was; no output at the OBD connector. The notes say "this vehicle failed the MIL/Check Engine Light due to OBD communications failure."

Is anyone familiar with this? The SES light is not on. I would check the volts at the OBD pins, but I can't read any pin numbers and wouldn't know which ones to check. Any advice?

Your firmware needs to be updated by the dealer as there is a known recall. I had the same problem with my 2002 when I purchased it in December.

+1 on the update, dealer will do it in a few hours at most. FYI: if you have performance software, be mindful as i had to have my Dinan software re-flashed after the emissions software update. The update simply allows your car to communicate with a new computer system the emissions guys are using. no big deal really... also, lots of prior discussion on this topic can be found in the archives.

Thanks, Vossen. So, you're saying the dealership is going to charge for this, as opposed to the (best) scenario Pedorro poses where it's a recall?

BTW, in the archives I found an exact thread (by Webb12 on 7/13/04) but there was no resolution.

Pedorro is exactly right, its a recall, it should definitely be free. Dinan also re-flashed my software free of charge. Thread you found seems a bit old, as I believe this was a mid-2006 recall. Let me see what i can find.

Edit: Found the thread. This should answer your questions... also includes the original letter BMW sent out to owners. Hope it helps!

Here's the entry from my service vehicle history for the ODB update:

"SIB 12 11 06 - Recall - 06E-A03 DME Programming for ODB Communication"

Hope this helps.

Yes it is a recall. I just had it done to my beast about a month ago. No charge. You should call for an appointment. The dealer I went to had about a month wait list to do it..... more like a month for a open spot when they're not busy making $$$ on the garage space.

Lee - yes. Big help. Much thanks! You guys were great.

I just got off the line with the dealer and will get the update in time to go in for my free retest at SMOG Pros.

Edit: Dinan also confirmed that they will re-flash for free.
