Hopefully, some helpful info... [resolving low end hesitation and poor idle quality]

I recently had some performance issues with my car and I thought I would post the experience on the board. It's a kind of return the favor thing, as I would have never been able to find the problem without it and it's memebers.

I have been experiencing some serious low end hesitation and poor idle quality, in the last month or so. The SES light was on and off on occassion. I took the car in to Bavarian Hypersports to get an Eisenmann exhaust, SS X-Pipe, SC program, underdrive pulley's and Strut Tower bar put on so I had Joel pull diagnostic codes at the same time. I had my local mechanic pull codes prior and we got similar results. Cam position sensor and Vanos Inlet pressure. I had been reading forums and brought up the MAF sensors but Joel thought I was looney. I had Bavarian replace the Cam position sensor and clear codes. The performance seemed a little better, but SES again. This time had my local mechanic pull code and it was 170 Secondary Air Quantity Low. Since, my Ebay ordered MAF's were stuck in customs I went to VW and dropped a couple of bills for MAFS w/ part#'s found on this board. Installed them cleared codes, and Holly S**t, my girl was back!!!! What a beast she is again. I'm changing these bad boys with every oil change now...

I had the same problem with my MAFS. New Mafs every 5000 miles is a bit much isn't it? How often are the MAFS being changed?

It's only money. I spent $2,500.00 on an exhaust to pick up a couple of HP what's $150.00 on ebay to make sure I keep it.

While MAF's may be semi consumables (and VW replacements pretty inexpensive), they should last more than 5000 miles. I have the same MAF's for at least 45000 miles (my ownership of the vehicle) and no issues (and I hope my car can't read this to make me a liar! )

No indication of mileage on yours, but see how long these new MAF's last before just changing out. Stock intake or K&N?
Regards,
Jerry

I'll take those old mafs you're throwing away...

I can recommend changing air filter elements much more frequently that BMW intervals- every other oil change, or even with every oil change, is not inappropriate.
