ive used one before, very simple. the pipe went down my oil gauge and i pumped the oil out. i didnt like it much due to the pumping and im old school. so i went back to getting under the car for an oil change.
Great concept, BUT and there is always a but! Contaminants/debris within the motor usually collect at the bottom of the oil pan near the bolt. When oil is changed (the old fashioned way) by removing the oil pan bolt the contaminants and debris gets drained along with the old oil. Does not happen when using the dipstick pump.

i have this too. It looks identical to the one from griots garage, i bought mine from something like www.mytoolshop.com (some variance of that url). I will admit never using it on the M5, i too like to get under the car to poke around.
On my 528, i used it regularly, griots catolog says various tests were done and it was pretty effective at getting all of the old oil out. I did a little test myself, drained it with the pump, then pulled the drain plug and there was essentially a few drops that come out.
If you, like many people, probably do not have the car level when you do the jack and drain method thru the drain plug, you're probably leaving more in the pan than you would with a topside extractor.

I do indeed have a concern about not getting a full drain, as well as having some debris collect near the plug. That said, doing it myself wouldn't involve a lift, so agreed I'd be leaving stuff in the pan still as well.

.
If you want to get every last drop, why not jack it up to get the pan under there and pull the plug, then jack it back down so it's level until it has drained, then jack it up again?
Not that it's worth the effort, but there are 2 ways to level the car - either in the air or on the ground.

Thanks for your thoughts folks.
FYI ... I found a driveway (my neighbor's across the street) where I can park the car in a level position, strattling the sidewalk ... the drive slopes down to their house, and of course on the other side of the sidewalk, down toward the street. Then I can reach everything without ramps or a rack ... enough room to move around underneath and all ... It was much easier than using my floor jack and jack stands ...

just make sure you have a shallow oil drain pan! I did this and made a mess as the car crushed the oil drain container, it was too tall to sit under the car.
