I was wondering if anyone could suggest a cleaner to remove some crusted tree sap without damaging my M5's finish/paint. So far, I've used Goo Gone (citrus cleaner) to remove the majority of the sticky goop of the sap. But as I've said before, now all that remains is a hard crust that Goo Gone will not remove.
Find a paint shop in your area with a good reccomendation. Have them look at it before you go any further. You may already be too late. Tree sap should be removed as soon as you see it. Letting it solidify is bad news.
you might be able to use a tiny drop of gasoline- apply a tiny drop of gas to a cloth and then try to gently rub out the sap on the hood. no matter what happens you want to immediately afterwards wash the car. then I suggest you at least wax the hood. this worked for me a long time ago on a honda so I dont know if it will work with the newer bmw paints. a suggestion before you try this is to call your dealer.
Here is what I do: I put a good dab of liquid wax on the drops of sap. If the drops are fresh, it will disolve them in 10 or 15 minutes. If the sap hardend, if may take over night to soften it.
I use a cheap wax, just smell it to make sure it is petrolium based. It will have a "Flamable" warning label on the container..
I had a number of cars over the years, and typically the stuff came off with no trace. Now I have an Audi (to be replaced by the long awaiting M5), and the sap actually left a mark in the clearcoat which can not be buffed out..

Could you recommend some brands? Regardless, I will also check with my dealer's body shop.
