Castrol TWS 10W60 engine oil

I have followed the various threads on which engine oil is recommended, alternatives etc. This is important to me as I have a 2000 model (pre ring mods) and I want to get it right. First, I want to say how impressed I am by the fellow members who have amazing special knowledge and experience in technical issues, one of which being lubricants. Second, I want to offer my gratitude for the way these guys share their know-how with dumbos like me. It is clear that, in my case, I should use TWS (or todays equivalent - Edge 10-60 etc), not least because the engine fitted in my model year is specifically compatible with its qualities.

One of the threads I read directed me to a TWS supplier in Germany

http://www.mapodo.de/product_info.php/products_id/311

I just ordered 10 litres for £75 + £7.50 shipping. For UK punters this is a good price I think, certainly much cheaper than the dealership and cheaper than sources of Edge 10-60 that I have found.

Thanks guys.

Conversions -

1) 1 US quart = 0.946 litres

2) $1 = £0.503

Conclusion - We pay $14.11 from Germany (a lot more than that in UK) against your $8.60 in US so you are right. If there is enough demand in UK, a Group Buy would be the way.....

Need to know -

Where to buy
Shipping costs

thats an excellent price for 10L..... and unless you get to the mg car club in cambridge which sells classic oils, tws is now only sold in 25l tubs to garages.

$8.60 US Dollars = NOTHING IN POUNDS STERLING AT THE MOMENT.....LOL (Four Pounds Thirty Pence actually.........Arghhhh).

I'm English but work for a US Cruise Line and get paid in US Dollars......Arghhh, Not good at the moment. When is the Dollar going to get back into the market again ????

Envisage0 : Your ohh, so right about the guys on here helping out us newbies. I've now had my M5 just a month, and it's my first "M Power" car, and like yours a 2000 pre face lift, but luckily with only 34,000 miles from new, so just like you, I'm treating her to the best of everything, especially when it comes to oils/fuel. Maybe we should get together and do a bulk buy....LOL. But having done a 700 mile round trip, and checked the oil, I found it had hardly used any. I deliberately checked the oil before I started my trip, and it was bang on the "Full" mark. When I got back home I let the car stand overnight and checked it the following morning, it it had dropped about 1cm on the dip stick, which to me is nothing. Are some of the claims of high oil usage over stated ?????, or can it be down to higher milage cars than mine, or is it purely a hit and miss affair and just the odd one or two cars that suffer with high oil consumption.

Hello Jim

I suffer high oil use, about 600m per litre. reading between the lines of the experts on this Board it may be that the oil that my M5 has been fed is too thin? (I am on 5W40 at present).

I am changing the oil next week when my German TWS delivery arrives and we will see.

If it does the business re making the engine quieter and/or reducing oil burn, a Group Buy from US brothers will look irresistable.

I'm just guessing mine has the right oil in it, due to it having only been serviced by BMW Main Dealers......but that might be assuming too much.

My service record is full of 'Mobil 1' oil changes.

Wrong oil put in by main dealers according to the Board.

Jim

You are not testing your oil usage correctly - the manual states to dip 1 minute after turning the engine off (and it has to be fully warmed).

You may have too little oil in your car if you are testing when cold.

D

PS Welcome to the Board and don't assume BMW dealers know anything about M5's - I have had 3 different oils used in mine!
