Argh...cracked lower right engine compartment cover...again

Over the weekend, I was pulling out of a parking space and ran into the parking curb stop under the front passenger side. I wasn't going more than 3MPH, but I instantly knew I had crushed it to smithereens by the sickening sound. I really wanted to swear, but couldn't because I had my two young kids in the back.

This is the 3rd time I've done this, so I know the part number by now. It's 51 71 2 694 832 for the right side with brake air duct cutout and outside air temperature sensor. Sometimes I think BMW designed this piece to crack and not flex, just so they can charge us every time this happens!

I'm going to try to order the part and fix it myself this time.

DEFINTELY A DIY!

Loosen the lugs, jack up the car, remove the wheel, R& R the cover: EASY to do...While in there tighten the headlight aim actuator...

Yes. I did mine myself, too. The hardest part is stuffing the edge into the fender at the forward part of the wheel well. Just do one side at a time so you can see how it fits together.

It makes it easier to loosen the screws holding the center section of the belly pan.

And, be sure to check to see how the rubber piece fits into the fender well.

Thanks for the advice and encouragement. I was able to replace it myself today. I just parked the car with the right front wheel on a curb, which gave me enough room to get underneath the car. Pretty easy fix, about half an hour.

I think you can get them for less than $99 by going to one of the phone or Internet discount BMW parts stores like bmwdiscountparts.com.
