2000 M5 - Oil residue in plenum

Lately I have been burning oil more than usual, so I decided to take off the plenum top today to take a look. I found that there is some oil by the crankcase vent valve and a slight residue on the velocity stacks. I'll post a picture later. So do you guys think the main cause is that theventilation valves are bad? I went ahead and ordered them just wanted to see what you guys thought....

I also forgot to mention that I was running 5w-30 and I just did an oil change with 10w-60 TWS oil.

The amount of oil you are describing is perfectly normal. I asked the M tech at my dealer this exact question when I had me plenum apart to replace the evap valve.

You should be running 10w-60 on a 2000, or are you after the ring change?

SoCaLE39,

I agree with rdm190 slight traces of oil is ok. When was your motor built? If it was before 03/00 then I think you need to put 10w60.

I also noticed oil in the breather tube coming out of the valve covers when I replaced my vent hoses. Is this ok?

Dude, looks really good. I'm constantly amazed at how well the motors of these cars look. Oil consumption in these cars can be normal, even if they have the newer rings. Just keep an eye on the oil level and fill as needed. As far as the oil, I've seen coated intakes on other cars...yours is obviously no where close. You could replace the oil control valves if you're in the mood, they only run about $55 ea and are really easy to get to.

i posted pics of mine at some point in the past, i think if you search 'oil in plenum' you'll find them for comparison. Not much different than yours really, which is normal.
