Telephone wire with standard RJ11 ends should work.

Perhaps one of these might work

sorry if i wasnt clear with my question but it is the receptacle in the car (where the cig lighter plugs in) that appears to be too shallow for the cig lighter power adaptor of the v1 so i dont know if anyone thats using a v1 in their e39 but not hardwired into the car experienced the same problem and found a solution? thanks

It was clear for me, the picture I posted is an auxiliary power adapter, it plugs into the flashlight socket in your glovebox, and then you can plug the v1 lighter adapter into that. BavAuto.com has them for 8.95.

If you don't want to do that, you can purchase a multi port adapter, which plugs into the cig lighter port and then gives you two ports, these usually have enough depth in them.

As far as getting a different adapter that would work with the v1, I don't think there is anything out there.

Is there a reason you don't want it hardwired? Once it's hardwired, the v1 can be removed in seconds and just as easily put back.

V1's power adapter works perfectly with the M5, you might have to wiggle it into the power socket a bit, but I assure you it does fit. You might check that there is nothing in the socket blocking the adapter from going in.

Either way, your fear of (or reluctance to) hardwire is a bit unfounded. The kit can be installed in about 5 minutes, and removed in the same amt of time w/o damage to the vehicle. That way, you can have the V1 up and out of the way (and out of sight from cops/theives/radar detector leeches).
