Driving today in first 80 degree weather of the year. Couple cars want to keep up so I hit Sport and DSC off and floor it, 60+ in 2nd and then shift to 3rd. Car does not pull so I shift to 4th, same thing. SES light comes on. I stop the car and restart after about 10 minutes. Problem gone and SES out. Any ideas?

Pull codes, they are stored even if the SES light goes off. Offhand, MAF's first, possible CPS or O2 sensor.

Thanks Jerry. I assume I need to by a tool to get the codes? I have heard about a Peake tool. What do you recommend and what should it cost?
Thanks... Richard...
Yup, Peake code reader. Different version for '00 versus '01 and later. Most '00's have the OBD port under the hood, while '01 and later have it above drivers left knee (North America).
Check our vendors, I got mine from Turner, about $150 shipped. Easy to use and it will pay for itself in no time.

Jerry
Okay, dropped my car off at the dealer and mentioned that I may have a MAF issue. The response was that there is no way to check this other than to install new ones and drive around and see if the SES issue is resolved. Unbelievable! . Am I being scammed?
They are gonna screw ya man...The VW MAFS work fine at a SMALL fraction of what the stealer wants...
Besides, mine did the EXACT same thing and then cleared itself: I bought a code reader and drove it until a code popped up: Bad CPS; Pretty easy DIY total cost like $130...
Even if you don't DIY, a reader helps keeps the dealer honest (not easy)...
