Welcome, so were you on subs or targets? I'm a sub dude myself.

I am one of those that do not think a properly oiled K&N will foul the mafs. It hasn't happened to me. However, I also dont think a K&N type filter buys you much of anything as far as horsepower goes. It is hard to beat a high quality, clean paper filter. I only have my K&N type filters because mine came with the Dinan CAI. Otherwise I'd just use paper filters.

Don't pet the sweaty stuff ... just drive it like it was stolen ... and, enjoy.

SS Squid

You know squid, my girlfriend sometimes refers to my M6 as "Das Boot" because it barely fits in the garage length wise.

The M5 is a very fast powerful boat.

I think you should consider a custom license plate "SS Squid" to show your Navy background and to showcase the fast boat you now have.

You can be the captain of your own boat!

If you do this, forever will I call you by "Captain Squid".....

Welcome Aboard!

Under normal street driving conditions you don't really need to open up the brake ducts. Only if you are driving on the track will you see any difference.

{begin soapbox} ok, so some of you might actually be braking hard enough, and often enough, on the street to cause your brakes to overheat and fade, but if you are, please... please... please go find a racetrack to play on. {end soapbox}

The aforementioned brake duct page is here: http://www.louv.tv/cars/m5/ducts/

Greg also has a great Brake Duct page. His method does not require removing the front bumper, but does reqqire removing the front wheels.

there are a couple of things you can do if you want to get rid of the "accept" screen. All things known to mankind about the bmw nav system can be found on x5world.com (or is it .org)... You essentially downgrade the system software, then upgrade it, iirc and you go into "uk mode" no accept screen, but you will have your nav units in meters or yards. On a mk4 dvd nav (std on 03, but easily upgradable) i think nav v27.1 or later "auto accepts" after something like 8 seconds, so you don't have to push the button, the disclaimer screen goes away automatically. I don't think you can update a mk3 (which is what you'd have std on an 02) to this software version.
Welcome!

3. How can I, a noob, check to see if the MAF needs to be changed? My cousin threw the beast on the computer with ZERO faults, any advice? I am getting 15 mpg atm and suspect that is a bit low.
Maybe but not too far off the mark, I see as low as 14 in stop-and-go and seldom better than 18 on the freeway. Of course that's on California MTBE and ethanol-diluted near-gas; we did Euro Delivery on the car and in driving conditions ranging from a 30mph crawl from Munich to Stuttgart to 140mph 'bahn cruising we averaged 19mpg on real gasoline.

4. The break ducts from the tires wells are closed, is that something I should open up?
As I think louv noted, opening the brake ducts isn't going to do you much unless you decide to go run the car in track events. Slotted rotors are fine but I'd stay away from the drilled ones, they'll crack in hard use (unless the rotor casting has bosses cast in to be drilled like Porsche rotors do.)

5. Its an 02 with 74k on it and I add chevron tech fuel additive every 3 tanks then after a few months I will do it every 6 months, is that good, does it matter, should i stop?
I don't think the additive does that much, mainly I think you ought to check out what gas brands near you meet the 'Top Tier' standard ( http://www.toptiergas.com ) and mostly use those.

7. Is there a way to have the nav screen pop up first when the car is started? I have scoured the owners manual btw.
I think mottati addressed the nag-screen issue, if that's what you meant; I run my nav system in UK mode anyway.
