Retrofit for Sirius Canada?

I've been looking to do a Mk4, Sirius, MP3 changer retrofit on my 2002 M5 so i figured i'd start seeing what the prices were at the local stealership.

The crackheads in parts at two different dealerships in Toronto are telling me that i cannot retrofit my car because Sirius is not available in Canada, even though i have been using it since it launched last year with a removable unit. There is also a press release on Sirius's website saying that it launched for BMW last summer and that all 2007 models are Sirius ready. They told me i would have to get a US PO box etc and do the grey market run around (like DirectTV/Dish) which doesn't make any sense.

So is Sirius not currently available if i bought a new 2007 Canadian e60/e90?

Has anyone in Canada upgraded to Sirius and activated with Sirius Canada? Sirius generally doesn't care about where the ESN was purchased. My removable Sirius radio was shipped up from the US and Sirius Canada activated it just fine.

Why tell them it is in a BMW? Give sirius canada the radio serial number and that'd be it I would think.

Can you buy the BMW sirius receiver in canada? If so it should be activatable.

I'm shocked, just shocked, that a BMW parts person wouldn't know...

Not one parts guy... two of them! (At different dealerships!) Isn't that crazy?

Tongue in cheek... they generally know nothing more than BMW tells them, and that isn't much.

When you activate here in the states it is setting up an account and giving them the radio serial number- I am pretty sure the sirius radio serial number doesnt tell them it is a BMW or portable or whatever-

Unfortunately, it seems that you'll have to give it a try... getting a concrete anwser using the details of your application might lead to "official no's". Maybe call sirius canada and say "I just bought a BMW with a sirius receiver, can I activate it? If the answer is yes, then ask 'what if it was originally sold in the USA- can it work?"

Good luck

I did the Sirius upgrade to my M6 with no problem. I bought my unit from the US and had my Canadian dealer do the software. It is called the SDARs retrofit and is part of the Canadian programming.

Apparently this unit cannot be activated through Sirius Canada but I activated online with Sirius US with a valid US address and it popped up like a charm.

Don't buy the Canadian units, they are rumored to use FM modulation.....

This is just for the E60 / E63's....I am not sure how the programming works for the E39....so long as the car see the receiver, activation is a snap and you don't need to deal with the CRTC Canadian Content BS.

Sirius Radio in Canadian BMWs

I am going to upgrade my E90 when it comes in.
